San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Yep, I took in some semi-feral cats from the Feral Cat Coalition. One became a house cat, one I don't see very often, the mama hunts daily though. I see her around the coop all the time, but she never bothers the chickens. I think I got lucky there. You can get cats spayed/neutered through a program through the county called S.N.A.P.

Hopefully they will protect the poultry... A few years ago a feral cat got into one of my chick pens and killed most of them, maimed 2 others who had to be culled due to severity of injury and of the 8 or ten chicks I had, only 3 survived. One just passed away this week, a Crevecouer hen that survived the cat attack as a baby (she had been bitten deeply in the head, I believe her skull was punctured) and lived to be over four years old.... As far as I can tell it was natural causes.

I would think that if the mama cat is cool with chickens, and the kittens are raised in the coop, they won't see chickens as prey. As opposed to feral cats who've gotten used to hunting birds in general.

*sigh* I really want/need to find some sort of chicken protector, feline or canine. One of my 6 week old mottled bantam cochins has gone missing and I'm pretty sure it was carried off by a raptor of some sort. There's no sign of my little Cookie anywhere and I'm so upset.

Any advice????

The only way to protect against raptors is aviary netting on top of the run or yard. they are rather inexpensive

I personally think that bantams shouldn't be free ranged. It's just not safe for them. I wouldn't trust a cat with such a small bird either, even if it was raised in a chicken coop. Sorry :(
