San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Oh Lynne - I'm so sorry! That must have been a huge shock. I wish I had some extra birds for you, but (like Allison) none of mine are really production layers.

Cute picture of the day: I shipped eggs up to Utah, and these little cutie pies hatched yesterday. They are F-2 Olive Eggers - 4 blues and a black. Is there anything cuter than fresh chicks?

I'm really looking forward to Saturday! It will be lots of fun to chat chickens, relax, see old friends and make some new ones...

Cute chicks Dana!

Look at the bright blue eggs one of my Legbars has started to lay!! Wahoo I am hatching those babies! The eggs that look white are actually your standard robin's egg blue sort of color - then I get these really bright ones. If I were closer to the nuclear power plant I would be worried she was going to also grow a third eye or something.
Very pretty blue!

So The eggs I got from Dana have already started pipping!

Little overachievers!

Can't wait to see pictures.

Over here in Broodyland, my BW Ameraucana spent a week in solitary, unbedded confinement before I set her free on the 5th. She seemed fine on the 6th, and then last night was back in the box and squawking at me. Sigh. I didn't do much about it; I was tired.

I go in the pen next door, and my sweet little half-Silkie is also attempting to be a broody. NO WAY! She's been laying eggs for all of five minutes, but she's managed to collect up four to sit on and get toasty. I picked her up, she gave me a very uncharacteristic hard peck, and stayed plopped on the ground where I set her. What is going on in my barn??? It's like a disease.

This morning both of them were up and running with their respective flocks, so maybe we're okay.

In my experience broodiness is very contagious

I've never had just one broody before lol I've had a broody epidemic where six of my birds went broody at once and when they were done another five decided to sit, it's crazy! But then again I had marans and cochins back then so what do you expect lol!

I got a 150 egger bator about a year ago and was in serious trouble. That is 50 chicks a week!!!!
That is a LOT of baby chick dander, poop to clean and feed....
X2 and then add about 8 Hovabators.
