Thanks Deb! I went to the local one's FB page and saw that Darlene posted them there. Hopefully someone will help them. I had the one Pekin here for a week (found a great home for her). She was a lot of fun! I just can't take on more pets. I'm overwhelmed as it is.

When we say "could live 12-14 years" does that mean its a normal lifespan? I ask because my husband recently asked me how long chickens live, and I said I'd read different answers and really didn't know. I know they can live a long time, but is that what most chickens will do if not made into soup or a predator's dinner?

it all depends on what you'd consider a normal lifespan. you have to look at the context or environment they are living in. In the wild I suspect four to five years is a good life. Under human care as a pet for the production of eggs presenting ideal conditions 12 to 14 would be possible. Especially with the newer schools of thought on feed and medical care.

Used to be the normal life span of a horse was about 25. Now its quite possible for them to live up to 50 years with good health and quality of life. I have a friend who's lesson pony passed at the ripe old age of 45. and she was still giving lessons to the youngsters taking excellent care of her charges.

Statistically the mortality before an animal gets to adult hood is higher than after an animal reaches a mature age. If you took that group of adults and figure their possible lifespan it goes up exponentially.

Just two sources for info but I betcha there is a discussion right here on BYC on the whole subject.

I cant bear to go to lakes any more. I used to go to the Santee Lakes which Does not allow the release of domesticated stock. The Santee lakes has nest boxes for wild ducks. There are Herons of all types there too. But the deal is the place is such a fisherman's hot spot the wild life is in danger from hooks lures and fishing line. I saw two Coots that were caught up in a fishing line and basically tied together with about two or three feet of monofilimant. They couldn't get away from each other one would run to the water dragging the other behind. I told the park people and they politely blew me off. I used to buy scratch and bring it to feed.... I wont go back.
