San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Is there a list of breeds that people have in the county? Or can we start one? I'm always sad at my hatch rate for shipped eggs.

I also have Cream Legbars available in very limited numbers.

I am also hatching CL x Delaware sexlinked crosses. I have two 5-6 week boys available, which look mostly like Delawares with crests. And some more eggs in the 'bator (although recently laying has been erratic). The girls will grow out to be buff barred columbian crested birds that lay green eggs.

WOW! Sound like pretty cool girls!

Does anyone have some roosters they are willing to part with? Or even better some roosters who are already butchered that they would be willing to sell? A friend of mine has a prescription from a chinese doctor to eat 10 roosters to cure what ails him. Sounds a bit unusual to me, but I did say I would see what I could find.

Thanks!
I have plenty of roosters. Some are already processed and frozen. PM me for details if interested.

All this breed talk has me super excited for hatching in the spring!!! So is it possible, do you think, to get a few different breeds to widen my egg color just from you guys???? I have never hatched eggs, but have a good neighbor that does it all the time. Is this kind of what you can do at a Meet-up?? Right now I have one or two each of about 8 breeds, all of which lay small creamy to medium brown eggs. I could fit a dozen more in my coop, probably!

Is anyone doing anything special for the chickens during this cold snap?? My first winter with them and our coop is open at the top of two walls. The past couple of nights they pop out like it wasn't a big deal.....but I have been waking at night with worry

I did notice tonight when I closed them up that they seem to be sitting/roosting directly on the poop boards instead of the roost above. It is lower and has the closed wall portion next to it as opposed to the open air.

Talking of cream legbar crosses, the first of our cream legbar x wheaten ameraucana crosses started laying this week

Super happy with the blue color and size of the eggs. The second egg not really pullet sized at all. We will for sure be making more of these guys this year.
The hens look like crested, bearded, muffed cream legbars with more gold

Need to post a pics.

The cold isn't as much of a problem as drafts--you need to have wind blocks. They also may be choosing the wider boards to roost on because if they can put their feet flat, they can lower their bodies an cover their feet with their down.
