San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I have eggs. Looks like 12/13 are now laying... yesterday was my first 11 egg day!

My little Colombian Wyandotte is a bit out of sorts today. She was just laying in a nest-like depression in the coop shavings for the morning. (Some of them really like to take their time laying, so I didn't worry too much.) After a few hours, I scooted her off, and she went right outside the coop and snuggled back down. She really hasn't moved much all day. She doesn't appear to be in pain or distress; she's just sitting on the ground and not going anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?

Mine have killed and eaten a mouse. I sure wish they'd chase the squirrels!!!

Nevermind... she's already gone.

That was so quick. I'm sorry. Birds disguise illness often until it's too late. How old was she? I've heard of people often losing birds around 2, then later just of old age. I have no idea why though.

She left me one last egg, right beside her. I think I'm going to keep it.

My hubby just came home and helped me bury her. I feel absolutely ridiculous crying over a chicken, but here I am.

dfdesigns, LALASD4 and Laurelm: My heart goes out to all you guys.

So sorry that you have lost some of your birds. I have never done it myself, but if you are curious about the causes of their death the California State Department of Food and Agriculture may point you in direction of a free necroscopy. The phone number is 866-922-2473.

I hope for all of you that you just had a single incident and like Al said, sometimes they just die.....

Don't be so hard on yourself..every life matters. I love my chickens and it breaks my heart when I lose one. I have around 500 birds and EVERYONE is important and is loved. I do everything I can for them and take them in if they get sick...............some show an incredible will to live and some just can't/don't make it.

Hell my favorite horse was colicky the other day and I just sat down beside him threw my arms around him and cried! He is my best friend. He is okay but I slept in the corral with him until I was sure.

So I guess my point is that you are not alone.

Animals are the best creatures I know! People could learn a lot if they’d lose their egos and pay attention!
