San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Neither my hubby or I could make it to the meet-up. I had work and was sick - he was volunteering with the El Cajon Relay For Life (family tradition).

I'm sorry I missed seeing you all but I'm sure there will be a next time soon.

Now to brag about my hubby. Briefly talked to him last night (he came home from the relay to feed everyone since I am sick - he's so awesome) and brought up that the D'Anver chicks need seperating from mama since she is laying again. Also warned him that our little Americauna/Barred Rock cross that has been living in our son's room will need to be moved out because he is getting ready to crow. Sure enough - this morning little Andy squeeked out his first attempt of a crow. So hubby and son went to the feed store, got supplies, and all the chicks are in their own brooder in the Chicken Room of the barn (used to the be the Feed Room until we got the D'Anvers and the Chicken Room is seperate from the main coop that is the size of two horse stalls).

So...if anyone is interested in D'Anvers please let me know. Also, if anyone has any pullets that will have green/blue eggs around Andy's age I am interested.

Onto the ducks! My male Pekins are totally in love with the rescued girls from the lake so they are keepers for sure. However, Beaker, the Muscovy, is very jealous. I would appreciate Muscovy hens if anyone know of any in the area.

Sounds like you have a good man there!! Sorry you couldn't make it :(

I spoke with my mom today. She has a Muscovy hen at the vets right now. I don't think she is very hopeful that it is going to survive. They're running tests on her but the "C" word was mentioned. Anyhow, that would leave her other hen alone. My mom is in her seventies and has arthritis, it's getting harder and harder for her to manage all the animals she has. She said she wasn't going to get her a friend if this one doesn't make it. Not that I want her sick duck to die, but if she does then I think my mom would be open to giving the remaining duck to someone who'd give her a great home. I'll let you know more as I know more.

We would gladly take her on if she needs to re-home her. That will make our hen to drake ratio even for now so that will really help. Since all the others are rescues it would make me feel better, too. Kinda proud of them all being rescues and didn't want to have to buy more - rehoming would be better for my conscious, too. However, I wish her best of luck with the duck that is sick. Which vet did she go to? Ranch San Diego Animal Hospital is awesome with poultry.

I use RSDAH for my birds and tortoises, but because it's a Sunday and they were closed she took her to an emergency hospital. They had to call their avian doctor in on his day off.

None of my chicken eggs hatched and out of four guinea eggs one was clear. Oh and I took them all out of the turner when the chicken eggs went on lock down....... So those Guinea eggs were un moving for the last week. Chicken eggs went on lock down last Sunday. Today the Guinea eggs were supposed to go on lockdown.

The incubator is at moms house. Long story. So I had given up..... But I got a call tonight at about 11:45 Mom said her dog started going nuts barking and going into my dads laboratory. And mom kept hearing bird cheeping...... She says the keet is dark and still wet. So Hopefully over the next three days the others will hatch too.

PeepsCA is a Grandma..... hee hee.....
