San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Went to get feed yesterday and got charged tax (as usual) by the checker, when her boss told her to take the tax off , as chicken feed sales are tax exempt, as long as feed is the only thing that is being purchased on the receipt. That was good news to me.

Then I came across this this morning on the Hay Guy's site:

Yes, this is true! MM does not charge tax either for the orders

For example our one bantam hen does not like dark chicks but accepts all the light colored ones you want to give her.strange but i know not to give her wellie eggs to hatch.

My broody hatched out 6 eggs over the past 3 days in this heat. She killed the 3 brown/dark ones and only left the 3 yellow/silver ones alive. No clue what happened there but I'm guessing she's a racist chicken too

I think the heat has been forcing some of the my broody's eggs to hatch too early. Only 1 out of 4 have survived so far. Our first losses and we've been taking it hard. Moved mama, chick, and remaining eggs into room w/the show birds. Seem to be happier there at least.

Need a home for Beaker the Muscovy duck. He's been attacking me and my kid. Time for him to go. Anyone have an ideas? Don't want to send him somewhere that he can hurt someone.

I agree with you about the heat causing the early hatches. Mine were due today, and I had 2 hatch Wednesday, 1 Thursday, 1 Friday and 2 today. All were put under my broody the same day, maybe it's a coincidence that the ones that died were brown. Maybe the mother just rejected them because they were weak from hatching too early. Makes more sense than a prejudicial hen. Besides, even if there was such thing, she's an Appenzeller Spitzhauben, she shouldn't have issues light or dark!

I hadn't thought about a chick being weak from hatching too early, but our first egg to hatch (a day early) resulted in a non-dry dead chick at the far side of the broody cage. Mama threw it out, perhaps this was why. We had another chick that pooped out before pipping - I heard it pecking when I held the egg to my ear, but it never made it past that stage.

I do have 7 healthy fuzzy butts. I'll get back to the people who Pm'd me, sorry its been busy. They'll be staying with their mamas for a little while - probably 6 weeks or so until the mamas won't be traumatized by missing babies. My two broodies are doing an excellent job of raising the chicks, though they have such different personalities it will be interesting to see what effect (if any) that has on the chicks. My buff orpington is content to hang out in or near her nest/cage even though she has access to the whole run and a chance to free range in the evening. My Ameraucana is on the go, teaching the babies about bugs and is happy to take them out into the yard to scratch in the grass. She is also around the run a lot more, and has two different places she is willing to settle down for the night in.

About selctive birds .............I had a White Silkie that would be a mother for chicks but if she did not like them she crushed them. I can not remember the exact details but I think that she wiped out all of my golden spangled hamburgs before I realized what was happening. They were just the wrong color. I saw her pecking on the darker chciks so I removed her from her job. She was very young then and must have changed by now.

Hey guys I am selling my nice aquarium brooders. No room for them at the new place.

One is a 125 gallon with a custom built stand and wire lid that me and my bf built.

The other is a 40 gallon with stand, it just needs a "brooder lid".

They both held water before I started using them for brooders.

Please let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

Thats a nice aquarium it would be great for raising up Tilapia fry as well.
