I looks like a hen and 2 looks like a hen for now. The other 2 are tricky. Neither scream roo but I suspect 4 is A roo, and if 3 continues to get more blue on it it will be a roo.

Thanks! At least these guys don't make you wait quite so long to figure out who they are... I've got some 14 week old blacks that I still am wavering on!

Our rescued ducks from the lake, Daffodil and Daisy are doing great. Only Daffodil is now Daffy now that HE has matured (ha ha - oops) and Daisy is now laying eggs.

Our Muscovy, Beaker, is no longer with us. He attacked me one too many times and while defending ourselves the last time he got hurt too bad. Very heart broken that we couldn't tame him and very angry with ourselves how it ended. Will still rescue ducks...but maybe only Pekins since we know what to do with them.

But the way, Desert Darlene, I'm open for more ducklings if you find any. Have a few options to rehome them. Places I lined up for Beaker but decided didn't want to give away an attack duck. Let me know.

To all of you having fatalities in the heat...so sorry for your losses. We lost a lot of chicks this summer with the heat. They hatched and died without drying. That was heartbreaking enough, can't imagine how it must feel for one of the adults to go, too.

Although I expressed interest in trying put together a meet-up this month looks like my plate is too full to make it happen. However, still thinking about it in the future so I can get to know all of you.

Sorry for the long, rambling, post. Been lurking from my phone but can't post from there.

I wondered about that one because he was so quiet compared to the other two. Sorry about that. I hope the boys aren't giving Daisy too much of a hard time. Glad you're getting eggs. So sorry about Beaker, he sure seemed like a cutie in the beginning.

I haven't come across any ducklings, other than the wild ones, lately. We still have the four Pekin drop offs from a few weeks ago that are still friendly and young, but are adapting well. I know at least two of them are boys, but I suspect all four are drakes. At least that's what I am hoping. We also have a pair or Rouens who are fitting in well right now, though I hope the female has no problems come next breeding season. Other than that, I don't know of anyone looking to rehome any babies.

Hello,
On craigslist there is some people who are giving away (free) some Mallard Ducks. Here is the add:

I am contemplating using sand in my coop. The featured article suggests river sand. Does anyone know where I could get river sand in San Diego? Thanks.

Go to any places like RCP Block and sand and they will have river sand. If you can get a yard it will be wayy cheaper than buying bags of sand. Annd they will deliver. I think last time I bought five yards of sand for my horse corral it was about a hundred bucks I split the cost with a couple of friends they bought fifteen yards.

Concrete mix sand I believe is the best because it has small and large sized particles it wont compact like Decomposed granite. San Diego has lots of rivers.... Belive it or not. San Diego River bed goes all the way from the ocean to El Capitan you can find river sand all along the way if you are willing to dig it yourself. But the deal is the rock and sand suppliers actually sterilize it and wash it before selling it. So it doesnt introduce weeds to your yard if you are using it as sand.

1 cu/ yd = 160sqft @ 2" depth
1 sack = 8sqft @ 1" depth

BTW I have Decomposed Granite in my coops and it does pack down but they still can dig dust bath holes in it.... LOL.
