San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I need advice. What does one do with cockerels that you can't keep, and no one else wants? If I didn't live in the 'burbs I'd raise them and eat them but its not feasible. I advertised on Facebook and had interested people who flaked or backed out. What does a backyard chicken keeper do in such cases?

Also $50 rabbit cage - http://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/grd/3280907396.html
You should call the vista feed store, they take them (for free) if they have any cage available. If they don't just call them every 2 days to see if they have any room. They are very nice people 9especially Cat and Bruce). Here is the number: 760 724 7310

Thank you! I think I've shopped there.

Does anyone have a bag of organic Modesto Milling rabbit feed they can sell me? Or does anyone know where I can buy organic rabbit feed locally? Thanks

Is there anyone who will have any Serama pullets or young hens for sale at the meet up? I am looking for 1-3 serama hens for a project I am working on. I am most interested in mottled, black, lavender, blue, barred, but will consider any color. PM me and let me know. Thanks!

Sorry about Blindy, I have a one eye-blind girl named Blinky.

If it is a weasel, it will definitely go after your chickens, been there done that. Not sure if they will take out a rat or not, but I would rather use the rats as target practice, and rid my self of the weasel. JMO

It's actually NOT a given that having a weasel on your property will lead to harm coming to your chickens. I have always had chickens and weasels on my properties, and never had a problem. You might have a problem with a resident weasel, but lots of people have weasels on their prop and never have any problems. They kill small animals, and can help control vermin. I wouldn't mess with it unless I had an actual problem.

Thanks, I haven't seen him since that day, though I've been looking. I'm still going with the thought that Blindy died of old age. I didn't notice injuries (or chunks taken out of her), not that I inspected her closely either. My other chickens have not been harassed and neither have my rabbits, adults or babies. I'll let it be for now, since I have a rat/mouse issue as well.

Have you checked with KW cages to see if they carry it?

Not recently, but they didn't carry it back in February. I'll just go with the local feed store/non-organic until I can re-up. It's not the end of the world for them to go off organic for a couple/few weeks.

Lake Murray dumped duck update:

There are now 10 or 11 dumped Pekins there and, today, I found out at least one of them is a female. There may be another female somewhere in the mix. The hen is on the front left and her boyfriend is on the front right. They are bonded to each other. Those two were dumped about a week or two ago in the raccoon infested area, but have now managed to find the people and the food. They are both extremely friendly and probably easy to catch, but I hate to see one get caught without the other. They were so friendly that I actually had to step back to take photos of them as they almost stepped on my feet.

Last I saw them, they were by the boat docks, but it's really hard to tell which one she is when she doesn't call because so many of the other Pekins are young and don't have a drake feather, either.

I will just have to hope she survives breeding season. I call her New Daisy after the last female Pekin I saw there a couple years ago.
