Sandwiches, Soup, and ???

2 packs cream cheese
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 bag toffee brickle (found where the chocolate chips are and cost about the same)

Moosh it all together. Let it sit in the fridge overnight. Stir again to blend it all and serve with sliced apples. If you are lazy like me, you can even buy the apples presliced. Or you can be even lazier like me and just eat it with a spoon. The apples, however, provide the illusion of it being healthy.

I promise you SIL won't be bringing it and everybody will eat it instead of whatever the diva does bring. It is larumphin' good.

(seriously... I have no self control over this apple dip. I will eat it until I

or I go into a sugar coma. Oh. My. Goodness. It is some kind of good despite the brown blobby look of it.)

edited to add- it counts as an appetizer, a salad and a dessert. No matter what crazy SIL whines about you've got it covered.

Oh Thank You, that was a well needed giggle!
And I love that idea too... esp. since SIL's weakness is toffee!

I did the spinach dip one year, it didn't go over real big on B's side... on MY side yes, in our household yes, but his side just aren't big spinach eaters (weirdos!)... you should have seen their faces when I once brought greens to thanksgiving... they'd never seen any green that wasn't spinach or lettuce before ... and B's mom is from Mississippi for pete's sake!

I was talking this out with a friend and she has a recipe for Cheesy Chicken Soup... sounds tastey and all I'd need to buy is the chicken (someday that will NOT be a problem... someday....) so I think I'll do that for soup... I can make it up tomorrow, freeze excess, then Day Of just warm and add the cheese... and I'm LOVING the ham and tator soup idea, and so is B so that's a winner.

Even picky nephew liked my ranch, so I'm thinking of making a semi-antipasti... salami (MIL never buys that) and some cheese (I have some munster, cheddar and mozz on hand) cubed, add some carrots, celery, maybe a few tomato slices (all on hand) and add some of my ranch... just made a fresh batch last night... add in those nummy dill mini pickles. YUM!

I totally bombed on the bread idea... I love zucchini bread, and strawberry and pumpkin... never made pumpkin but I'm willing to try... can't believe I didn't think of that one!

May go ahead and do the chili relleno thing too... just for my sake as that turned out yummmmmy and was super easy.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE IDEAS AND RECIPES!!!

how about a mac and cheese? we do a cheesy potato bake.. frozen hash brown, cheddar cheese, bacon bits, sourcream.. sort of like a stuffed baked potatoe. always a hit. or a fruit salad? drained fruit cocktail. mini marshmallows. sour cream.. banana slices, diced apples. any fruit you like.. nuts or coconuts what ever you guys like

I gave up on taking anything to dinner with my dear MIL. She would ask what I was planning on bringing and if I said, "CHILI" guess what was already on the table when we got there? "CHILI!!!" Oh well, now I just go and enjoy the meal that she prepares since I decided that was all she wanted.

You mean I'm not the only one? 'cept it's the SIL not the MIL... MIL isn't much of a cook. Not to be mean or anything, but she just has never been interested enough to want to improve. They were using flake potatoes on Thanksgiving for crying out loud!!

Okay, I scratched the zucc bread idea... I love it, but most others don't. And I remembered that one of the neighbors sends a loaf and another adds at least half a loaf's worth of slices to the annual treat tray.

But I did get the sausage to make those sausage balls... those sound SO good!

My side... Mom's doing the ham. I've got mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and macaroni and cheese to make. Should prolly see if she's doing anything for dessert... I know she's been making fudge, divinity, etc... that's enough for me... she's awesome at divinity.

Thanks guys for all these brilliant ideas. Would have panicked without you!

In the dairy section of your grocery store you can find canned bread-sticks (like the canned biscuits) -- brush them with butter, roll in Parmesan cheese, chopped nuts, packaged dry Ranch Dressing, twist, bake and you're ready to 'party' -- these always are a hit with the kind of meal you are describing --

Given this description, I think I would bring hard liquor, and lots of it.

I am actually serious--my grandmother behaves similarly, it never ends with some personalities. 87 years old and she throws tantrums when things aren't to her liking. So for my grandfather's birthday, I went to the liquor store and stocked the bar. Honey, you would not BELIEVE how many people, upon arriving, went straight to the hard liquor, knowing what the evening was going to be like. My grandmother, upon finding out that suddenly everyone at the birthday party was too sloshed to care about her whining and yelling, amazingly did not throw her usual all-out tantrum hissyfit. I suspect she realized she would only have been laughed at. It was awesome. I highly recommend it, make SIL the designated driver and babysitter (hey, she wants to be responsible for everything, let her wear herself out with it) and let everyone else have fun around her.
