Savannah Playhouse Coop- Finally Finished!

I love it!!

How long did it take you to put the playhouse part together? I had read about that model, and it got pretty good reviews, but the only major complaint was that it was complicated/took a long time to put it together. (??) But there were plenty of others that said it wasn't too difficult. Just curious!!

Thanks for the nice comments.

I haven't added the nest boxes yet, but I will be putting 3 or 4 along the back wall.

As far as putting it together, it really wasn't that bad. My husband and I did it bit by bit (during our 2 year old's nap times). I think overall it probably took us about 6 hours, and that was with some major mistakes (like putting the walls together incorrectly and having to take it all apart). The best thing you can do is label all of the parts before getting started.

The coop is made out of cedar, so I painted the whole thing with a clear sealant coat to get rid of any fumes.

As far as fitting 12 chickens in there, that is cutting it a bit close, I think. By winter we'll only have around 6 (the roosters will be dinner before they mature).

We used the savannah also, and NHdoc is right, preparation is the key. The wall sections come in 22" sections and lots of little pieces. If you have everything sorted and ready it goes up fairly quickly. We primed and painted all the pieces to seal the cedar and to match our home.

We set ours on concrete, raised on a 4x4 base. That lets us use the deep litter method without losing the litter when the doors open.

We also made a couple changes in the construction itself. For better ventilation we put two windows on one side and house vents on the other. The pop door is an extra large pet door.

For stability we put foam board insulation between the panels and lined it all with 1/2" plywood. We installed hardware cloth behind each window, and plexiglass in each window frame.

It would be kind of neat to see the different ways people have used this same playhouse.
