Quail are as tiny as I'd go, personally, but I know a lot of those old recipes began as sheer survival tactics, although some were fashionable.
Anyway, you guys, I'm just going to quit this thread because I can see no use in me being here. I am pro- introduced pest species control, though I rarely agree with how it is carried out, not that there are usually too many good options that please everyone, and as much as I like sparrows too.
Yes, there are many introduced species who are naturalized and not considered pests, which to me actually sounds more like 'we can't get rid of them and we don't know how damaging they are so we've decided they're naturalized and can stay'. Like red deer in Victoria, Australia. They'll be doing plenty of harm to natives but they're naturalized.
