Saw huge racoon tonight, is this a shoot on site critter, wait and see

If the coon has not hurt anybody, trap it and put it in the critter relocation program. If it will not coperate then shoot it. Coon is pretty tasty. It taste alot like dog. You thought I was going to say chicken.

Don't relocate. Not only will someone else have the problem of a trap smart coon if the animal survives, it's likely the coon itself will die miserably trying to find food and shelter in an alien and already occupied territory.

ETA: Kittymomma: I live against endless miles of BLM that is backed by the whole strip of National Forest that runs North and South through the state of Oregon. If I were to relocate, I could pretty much make sure that the bugger wouldn't be a problem for anyone else. This isn't an urbanized racoon, I am pretty sure he could figure out how to survive as long as I plunked him down where ever before winter at a similar elevation. So, if I catch it in a trap, I will decide then what to do with it. Thanks for your concern though, I would be ticked if someone made a racoon my problem, especially one of this size, it is good that you said something.

ETA: I hope my tone here didn't come across as defensive. Not meant that way at all, it is a good point that you brought up.

KILL it! If you ever see the results of a racoon attack on chickens you would not have any hesitation doing it either. He will get in and wreak havoc eventually.

I do not like killing anything but just visualizing my poor chickens gutted with their heads off makes my trigger finger really itchy. One even killed my old sleeping cat last year!!!! That one is taking a dirt nap.

Coons die on sight here! They are crafty, very dexterious, open latches, locks, windows etc etc, I do not waste time with them. Foxes and Possum I leave alone usually because neither can get in my coop but coons...nope don't trust em, I have seen what they can do and how they can use teamwork to get in....nope bye bye if I see em.

I remember seeing the horrible scene after a coon got into our coop when I was a kid. Needless to say I also have some memories of staying up late with dad and the 22 waiting for the coon to return.

Hey, you guys/gals, back up a little. I said I wanted to eat it didn't I?

If I get a shot at it I'm taking it. I'm not quessy (sp

) in the slightest. And honestly, if I trap it, I doubt it will find a new home anyplace other than whatever afterlife there is for our woodland creatures. Originally just posted to see what the general consensus was. I am new to parts of this, and don't want to kill something just because I am trigger happy. If you all came back with "Hey man, they usually leave well enough alone unless you leave the coop open," then I would've chilled. Last post was a IF scenerio, that's all.

Go for a head shot; you don't want a bunch of gun shot meat. Then relocate him to an oven at about 350 degrees until done.

Well, you can always call animal control and they can come out and shoot it. That's usually what they do don't they?
