Saw huge racoon tonight, is this a shoot on site critter, wait and see

In my opinion, raccoon is NOT very tasty.. At least the piece of one that I ate was very greasy.... I guess if I didn't have chicken, I could eat it though....

For what’s it worth, here’s what I have been told. Glands in neck, ‘arm’ pits, somewhere inside where upper thy meets body, elbows and knees. Whish I could tell you what to look for but I’ve never see what they look like. I’m sure sooner or later I’m going to have to find out how to dress out one of these critters. Armadillo isn’t hard to clean, (yes people people I know they MAY carry Leprosy) tastes like pork and Nutria tastes like beef (no people the aren’t dirty animals. They are vegetarians and are actually quite clean.) Fried grasshoppers or chocolate covered ants anyone? Yum yum!

Now I'm wondering if they taste like a gigantic squirrel. The squirrel I had as a kid was greasy, but so good. If not, maybe I could set up a nut station just for the racoon. Let it eat off that for awhile.. LOL. JK

Thanks for the tip rufus! Exactly the reason I have decided against the shot gun. I hate picking that stuff out

I think if I called animal controll out here they would tell me that they would happily come and take care of it for me, and then would volunteer something like "I hope you filed a report that all your guns were stollen, and it sucks you don't know your neighbors yet." LOL. Kidding, but this is the country, I can't see tax dollars going towards this. In town, I get it. But not here. They can stay busy dealing with bad livestock owners or rampaging rabid cougars or something.

I'd like to say that I wouldn't try the bugs, but I probably would... LOL. The curiousity would get me eventually.

And if it doesn't just "pass through"...................
I'd rather be proactive and pass him on to the next life before it sends my chickens there.

it looks almost like a small lump of fat on the surface of the meat it will have a capillary tube coming away from it sometimes they are kina in between the muscle. Most who eat coon take as much of the fat off they can then they are par boiled just a bit to keep them from being so greasy corn and apple/grape fed have a much better taste then those that are dumpster divers

If you think you only have the 1 raccoon, you're mistaken. From what I have read, you can have anywhere between 3 to 100 per 1 square mile. It is perfectly legal to shoot raccoon any time of the year in Oregon. However, if you live in the city limits, your supposedly required to get a permit to transport it out of the city before shooting it. (Don't ask...don't tell)

Regarding the eating of Raccoon, I personally have never had it, but a friend of mine tells me it is quite tasty. There are numerous websites offering preparation tips and techniques. My friend tells me his mother used to make the absolutely flakest pie crust from Raccoon oil.

Right now I'm doing my darnest to trap a mother raccoon and 4 of the "cutest" little coons you've ever seen. My friend tells me that he'll take them when I get them trapped. What happens to them after that, I don't want to know.

To each his own....I just want my chickens to be safe.

Thanks for the info. Now that you’ve described it I know exactly what you’re talking about. I don’t plan on haveing to shoot any but if I do it’s going in the pot.
