scaley leg mite on pekin (feathery legs)

My pekin has scale leg mite and I've started treating her with scale leg mite cream, using a cotton bud to apply between the feathers, but I'm concerned I'm not getting thorough coverage because of her feathers. Can anyone suggest a better method or product for feather legged breeds? Is surgical spirit a way forward? I just worry that it is so drying, but I've read it recommended.
