Screaming chickens

I have my chickens for eggs, I have 8 Nest boxes for my 15 chickens but they aren’t that clean or private. Should it be in a more private space?

Coops should be reasonably clean for health and happiness.

Boxes should not be simply part of the main floor but sectioned off into cubby holes at least 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches. That keeps the laying hens away from foot traffic.

But I agree. Chickens are not silent animals. You will hear periodic squawking during the day. However, if you have an hour of screaming, something is wrong. (I usually find it is an aerial predator.)

I have been working with my flock to tone it down. Most of my girls are laying now for the first time, 7 out of 10. I have no idea what I'm doing or if it makes a difference but I'm giving it a go. They start the song I go out and tell them, good job thanks for the egg and drop some scratch feed and open the run door. Everytime one starts I talk back from the house (40 steps or so to coop). Sometimes that's enough and sometimes I have to drop a 1/4 cup of scratch or handful of green grass and they move on. But one of my barred rocks will just go to town. I bet I could beat her with a rock and she wouldn't notice. Four out of seven seem to be making more than a one or two good clucks. The barred rock is wanting to put on Broadway musical. Lucky that her show time is 7:45-08:00 . LOL and she is laying the smallest egg. Go figure!

You know what my chickens did in the summer? Well, they would stretch their necks on the perch inside the coop and start "yelling"! (This was in the morning before we let them out.)

Me and my family were like... "Oh no! Somebody go let them out! We will annoy the neighbors." Well, I guess my chickens learned that if they called really loud someone would come outside and let them out into the 'fresh morning air'! Maybe that's what your chickens are trying to do: Get your attention.

Also, some just do it for fun....

I just always thought they were proud of their egg and had to tell the world about it. I have one hen in particular that's VERY proud of her egg, and she brags about it till she gets the rooster riled up. Then they both brag about it back and forth to each other. It goes on for quite a while and sometimes another hen or two will yell at them, possibly telling them to shut up already. It's like living in a New York ghetto. I find it humorous. But I have no near neighbors.

Does it matter who's hitched to the wagon as long as the wagon gets pulled to town? I just came inside from shutting Betty song up and opening the covered run door and letting them out to the netted run. Going inside and talking to her made her shut up.
Depends on if you want to do that every time they get too loud....I know I wouldn't.

Have your neighbors actually complained to you about your noisy flock? Or is the noise simply annoying and stressful to you?

The egg laying period of the day is noisiest. The rest of the day, hens are pretty quiet. Even during the egg laying period, the noise is intermittent. It certainly cannot be compared to the water-torture- repetitive-constant-nerve-wracking-make-you-want-to-scream noise of a dog barking all day and all night. Can you tell I've experienced this?

Maybe if the egg laying is too noisy for you to endure, you should think about rehoming the flock and buying eggs at the store.
