I did find this Thomas's Liquid Stainless Steel that has great reviews, but I'm betting it will be much more expensive than just gloss black applicance paint. I think that's what I'll try first, painting the almond a glossy black color.

Cyn, sweetie, save yourself the trouble. Just buy the range hood you want. I've been through that whole scrubbing, cleaning and prepping route with the range hood we had in the big trailer we lived in while building the house. Trust me, you do NOT want to go there!

First of all, it's nearly impossible to get ALL of the grease off of the unit. You may think you've done a bang up job, but there is almost always enough residue to screw up your paint job. And you won't know this until after you paint it and the paint has dried. It usually "alligators" up and then you have an even bigger mess to fix.

The so called "stainless steel" paints are nothing more than a metallic grey paint. The two different brands that I tried [on a completely unrelated project] looked like something that crawled out of the cat litter box!

The results were definitely NOT as advertised!

Just do yourself a HUGE favor, and buy a new one. You'll love the improvements they've made in the sound level of the fans on them now. Congrats on the new stove, by the way. It's a beauty! May you enjoy many years of happy cooking on/in it!

Good morning, all!

I'm kicking around the idea of painting my range hood with appliance paint rather than buying a new one. It works fine, just is the wrong color. So, what do you think? Anyone ever used spray appliance epoxy paint? And would you do glossy black or try the stainless look? Would the stainless look hokey or does it work well?

Of course, we'd have to remove the hood, degrease it well, etc. The exhaust pipe through the ceiling is exposed and would have to be painted in place, plus the backsplash is light almond colored, but not sure I could do anything about that--it isn't that visible anyway, but it goes all the way behind the range, behind the hood and up to the ceiling, a sheet of formica, I think it is.

Krylon comes in black, but Rustoleum has one in Stainless as well:

I repainted a dishwasher once using spray car paint. Came out nice. I think it will be fine, esp if it works well to begin with. Maybe appliance spray is even better. I don't think it's a bad idea!

Layers of light spray , not all at once.

I wouldn't do stainless look paint. If I wanted stainless, I'd do the actual liquid stainless steel-it actually is stainless steel- impregnated liquid. I can't imagine a silver metallic paint ever looking like real stainless steel.

The thing is, I could try the paint first-we have to remove the hood anyway and I have to degrease and paint the big exhaust pipe that runs up through the ceiling, too. A can of paint is only about $6-7. If it doesn't turn out well, we could then just buy the hood, but if I can save that $150-175, that would buy my cabinet pulls sooner. I need about 29 of them and the nicer ones run about $4-6 per handle.

Kathy, upon seeing your absolutely lovingly put snarky comment (hope you are laughing), I am trying to get your picture out of my system, but it says it's default and can't be erased. I've contacted a friend who has alot of puter knowledge to see if she can figure out how to. I liked your 50% remark.
