Buckwheats comb doesn't look red enough and I don't know that an egg that small would spread her bones enough to notice. I only have one CM that lays dark eggs but I don't know which. I really need a seperate coop for finding out who lays what egg. That egg is right next to one of Frenchy's.

I am waiting on two Wheaten Marans pullets, 1 welsummer, 1 blue wheaten ameracauna and 2 "olive eggers" to start laying. I found a light green egg under my big oak tree, so thinking one of the "olive eggers" is really just an easter egger and is starting to lay as she hangs out up there. The Marans and Wellie girls are little and don't look like anywhere near "big enough" to start laying....but sure seems like they are getting near that age. The Blue wheaten ameracauna was so thin for so long......she was way too docile to make it to the front of the food line, even when I had tons of feeding stations up. Now that I put up the big 50lb bucket feeders, i catch her at the one in the covered pen a lot. Making up for lost time I home! Where are my colored eggs?

I've got a lot of molters and the heat is kicking up again.......there was not a single egg in the coop yesterday. Not one!!!! I found a small nest in the broody hutch, as expected...not sure if there are egg eaters mixed in, they are hiding eggs, or just not laying. But with over 50 birds near or at laying age, you'd think I could at least get a dozen a day, right? Slackers.

Slightly offtrack.......Moved the last batch of babies out to the small "breeder coop" and pen last night. They had their frst taste of being "on the ground" this morning. Sure seemed to be enjoying themselves. Here they were in the broody hutch last night before the move. Scott, the two blue barred rock/dellie mixes are in this group and doing well now.

Mr Mottled, my evil bantam mottled cochin rooster got to come back out to the big yard to make room for them in his old coop. He was rampaging around the yard this morning, being evil as always. Last time I had him out after dark, in the open part of the garage with me......he couldn't quite get up the nerve to follow me out into the darkness, but did follow me all over the garage. I think he was considering biting my ankles since he was doing the sideways shuffle here and there. Crazy evil bird. He climbed up on a bucket and jumped into the broody hutch while the babies were still in there....didn't hurt them, but definitely gave them a scare.

To get completely offtrack........but I think there are blue fans here........I have a new project in the works. Blue bearded fluffy cochin type birds. LOL. they are so darn cute! I have a salmon fav/cochin who is blue and bearded and poofy and so darn cute. And a girl, yay!

And then I ended up with an EE/Cochin who is blue and bearded and so darn cute. Also a girl, yay! Hard to see her beard but it is there! she is still quite young.

The salmon fav/cochin was a Salmon Fav Hen x Blue Cochin Rooster. Both standards.

The ee/cochin was a Bantam Cochin Hen x Splash EE Rooster. Hen bantam, rooster standard. Not sure if the bantam cochin hen was black or barred.

I need a bearded splash rooster to cross on my black and black barred hens to make blue bearded feather legged birds. They are gorgeous...I want a whole flock of them.

I also have a group of Cochin/Brahmas that are blue. No beards on them. Blue Brahma Project. I have a blue cochin hen with a pea comb I am going to cross over the blue Cochin/Brahma rooster with a pea comb.

I just want a whole flock of blues. How the heck can I make a blue mottled bearded cochin cross?

Who wouldn't want big blue fluffy birds. Especially big blue fluffy BEARDED birds with feathered legs? Its win win.

Oh Beth! Not LUKE!

Aw crap! I liked him! Such a sweet boy and so gosh darn good with his girls.

I agree with Cetawin. I think these boys put their entire heart and soul into being flock roosters, to the point of neglecting their own health. If only we could get them to understand that they need to eat and drink every bit as much as the girls do. But they just aren't hard wired that way.

I see it in Chief as well. I try and try to make sure he gets a bit of the treats that are offered, only to watch him take it and then hand it to one of his favorite girls!

It's frustrating to say the least! And it's something none of us has any control over. They are who they are. Which probably makes it all the more painful when we loose one.

Again,

I'm so sorry for your loss of Luke, Beth. He was a great little man.

Nellabean: I like that name Nellabean, I think I may name a chicken Nellabean.

Anyhow do the finger test. Thats how I knew which of my EE's had started laying. Now if the other two would get going.

Oh and the pics are nice too.

Just kidding sweetie! You know we all love your crosses and experimentation's. These latest are no exception.

Let me know when you get a good breeding population going. I think I'd very much enjoy having big blue fluffy birds with beards and feathered legs around here. Sounds like winter would be an absolute cake walk for them!

GMTA Tim! I have a little RIR cross out there that looks darned near identical to Nella's avatar. Her name is Gretchen. Lately, I've caught myself calling her "Little Nellabean". Strangely enough, she seems to know I'm referring to HER!

OK, you better explain the "finger test" cuz I'm over here imagining all sorts of lurid things!

You mean the one that created this two headed chicken. One head up front, one head out back......can't beat that. Sees the food coming and going LOL. I may be the first BYCer to successfully graft a chicken onto another chickens rear end.

In serious news, the butthead chicken there is one who got taken by the hawk
sad.png

Surprisingly enough, and I am probably seriously jinxing myself here, I have had no hawk losses since the hawk tried to attack the broody mom and lost...the day I was outside and witnessed it. I immediately let 4 roosters out into the big yard (upgraded them, I like to say) to help with hawk calls and have had no missing birds since.

Very interesting.

Now, now, children........there is someone on BYC with the user name UncleBean..........I saw him on a thread and popped on there and posted "I think I found my long lost uncle!".

And nobody got it.

*crickets chirp*

Feel free to name all amazingly awesome chickens after the grand Ms NellaBean. Someone I used to work with (who was mostly psychotic, but that is beside the point) used to randomly call me NellaBean. Who knows. My name is neither nella nor bean LOL. My boyfriend does like to call me Nelly though

Thanks, everyone. It was a shocker, that's for sure. I am keeping a double eagle eye on everyone, but don't see any abnormal behavior. It's so QUIET out there without Luke chortling around.

Rancher, is that one egg really a pale yellow? You have a colorful grouping, that's for sure.

Cetawin and Amy, Jo has a dished head, but not extremely so, and it is a little longer than I would like. The *Morafic influence. He had an extreme dish, but his head was a bit long, too. I find the Polish and Russian lines that were imported in the 70's and 80's were plain headed - the Poles and Russians weren't about to let their best horses go. Some of the domestic stock from the Blunt imports and a few of the other imports in the early part of the 20th century did not have the most exotic heads either. The standard for Arabs actually allows for a straight profile, just not a Roman nose type line. Bey Shah looked better in his pictures than in real life. I saw him not long before they put him down- very, very masculine horse, but not the best eye or head in the world.

Beth, I am soooooo sorry to hear about Luke.

I just don't know why things like this happen. Darn it!

I just finished up with a BUSY morning. I have had this appointment with the state for over 3 months .... today was the day. Forget NPIP testing, I requested ALL the other testing available. So, it happened that there was money in the necessary funds to do all these tests. They took blood samples from 30 of my birds and I should have the results back in about a week. They did talk me into getting NPIP tested too. I will do that later on. I mostly want to have this testing done. I can not remember all the things it tests for, but it is alot .... like MG, MS (all the mycoplasmas), etc. Of course Avian Influenza swabs were taken too. I want to know I have a clean healthy flock.

It made me happy when the director of the program said, "If I were a chicken, I would want to live here." Yeah, silly, I know, but it made me feel good. With each blood draw she told me how good each bird looked, and she checked them all over .... eyes, vents, etc. Now,

hope for good healthy test results!

Afternoon all....

Beth, I am soooo sorry to hear about Luke. With so much of that happening this summer, I've just about convinced myself to stop naming my birds. My Sugar is broody again and you are welcome to ANYTHING she hatches....should be some Dels in there from Pepper over Sugar, Sassy and Lil Bit. Could also be a few del/rock crosses....I'm sure we could get a BYC train going to get them to you

I'm a bit bummed out today today as well. Got a call from the recruiter right before lunch and he had been told by the company I interviewed with that "I was just not a good fit"....whatever that means. Guess its back to the drawing board. Apparently, thats not where God wanted me, but I do appreciate all of your prayers on my behalf!! Something good is gonna happen, I just know it....it's just a matter of when.

Weather here is still crummy....about 92 degrees today and we haven't had rain in over 2+ weeks. Everything here is a dust bowl and my allergies are not likin' it one bit. I'm praying some cooler temps and a bit of rain are on the way. LOTS of trees here are already turning brown and turning loose their leaves....so much for Fall colors

Hope everyone is having a great day! Tim....would love to see some new pix of Darcy!!! I'm a LONG WAY (hopefully!!!) from grandbabies, but she is sure one beautiful little one and I'd love to see some new ones when you have time. Nella....glad to know the del cross babies are doing well.

Take care y'all

Scott
