Oooooh, i love that frizzle hen, she is super cute. No idea on the chick but it looks painful

I'm going to go out on a limb here Tim, and say that the first picture of the little Del is that of a cockerel. Notice the redness of the wattles that are just starting to emerge? Compare those to the wattles of the chick in the second photo of the Del's. That one, I'm betting is a pullet. If the order of these chicks is the same in the picture of the two of them together, showing the shape of their backs, you'll notice that one is narrower than the other. Again, I think that is the pullet. Now, that's just a guess mind you. I know I don't begin to have enough experience sexing chicks to say with any authority, but that's what those two strike me as being.

As for the little chick with the wounds: Neosporin sounds like it's about the best you'll be able to do, and hope that that she can recover mostly on her own. Keep it slathered up real good so that she doesn't loose mobility there. Maybe twice a day would be better? What could possibly cause such a wound and not kill her outright? I have NO idea! That is indeed a mystery. Could something have fallen on her and grazed her wing and side just enough to cause the loss of skin and feather/fuzz? Please, refresh my memory on where she was when the injury occurred. Beth, what are your thoughts on the wounds on this little chick? Could it have been a cat maybe who just wasn't fast enough to finish the job?? I hope she makes it. She's a cutie.

Ain't it frustrating when you know they should be laying by now, but aren't? All I can say about that is that they lay when they're darn good and ready to, and not one day sooner!

Both are pretty little girls. I hope they start laying for you soon. You know what they say about a watched pot never boiling? Maybe the same is true with pullets?

Amy ... are you picking up CB and squeezing him to a certain tune?

Never heard of such a thing but I know the male of any species can be talented with bodily functioning type noises.

Beth, I got them Sat afternoon and she is absolutely beautiful. DH and I are doing some serious talking, checking transport means etc etc. As we are not ready here, we are considering a possible wintering at my MILs barn but I hate her farrier and will not let him within a mile of any horse of mine, so I would want her feet done before she went down. The farrier and I almost came to blows when he struck my BIL's horse across the face with a board for trying to sidestep, needless to say I exploded on him and nearly took his head off myself. Also my neighbor has a nice secure barn and possibly an open stall and that would be closer so....yes we are in deep discussion. As you already know, it is a large and longtime committment and we want to make sure we can provide a safe and secure environment for her in the immediate. Is she a Diva ...ie does she get blanketed for the winter or just stalled or ? Is she barefoot? Also, Kentucky is tough on bringing horses in....Coggins test within 30 days, health certificate, ownership documents ie bill of sale etc etc. I am contacting the powers that be tomorrow to get the specifics.

Tim, I just treated one of scbatz33's chicks that had half a wing torn off by the puppy. Once I got the infection pocket lanced and cleaned, it was twice a day neosporin and he healed up find in about 8 days.

Well, now thanks for your pointers. The one Del has a nice six point comb in that the points are evenly seperated. I do hope your right that at least one of them is a pullet.

As for the Ee, do you suppose it's what's in the cross that has an effect on when they lay? Now Buckwheat as the frizzle is called should be laying soon I hope.

The little chick's wound I have no idea how it happened. The broody and her four chicks were in the run. But I figure one of the bigger girls landed on the chick in the coop jumping down from the run. There are cats and the neighbors cat has been around and may have tried to grab the chick through the chicken wire but could have gotten in the run as the door is open though the whole yard is fenced. It can't be seen but there are feathers along the bottom edge of it's wing.

Any op's on whether to let it live. I'm afraid I may have to keep it seperate from the flock and that can get tricky. It doesn't seem to flex it's wing, though I suppose it hurts as Ive had to soak it to get it apart and it's bled some, before I figured out to keep it lubricated with neosporin. I'm worried I may have to keep it lubricated to keep it from drying out in the sun and weather, or keep it in a special pen. Then I run the risk of becoming overly attached to her. Lord knows it's difficult enough with the few I have.

The books neve cover these things.

Thanks again
Rancher

So I stood outside tonight near lockup time. Everybody except the 2 wild ladies who sleep in the tree went into the coop. Wonder if angry chicken lady's presence at the front of the garage kept them on their best behavior, or if they learned their lesson last night when the angry chicken lady whooped their butts right into the coop LOL.

Also, my little half squashed chick is definitely gone. And the broody mom is no longer broody and alive and well. No idea what happened to it. The hawk had tried for it more than once but the broody mom fought it off each time. She stopped taking care of the chick a few days ago, and I wonder if the hawk snagged it then? Who knows. But definitely nowhere to be found. Poor thing

Chicken sale this weekend. Caught one of my very very poor quality hatchery cochin hens eating eggs today so off she will go this weekend. last thing i need is for her to teach everyone else! They were cracked eggs i had left sitting on the broody hutch.......undamaged eggs left in the nests, so who knows. Going to try to find 15-20 birds to take this weekend. Not sure if i'll be able to make either of the October dates, so gotta make it a good one. Gotta downsize before winter!

Rancher: how long has this chick been injured?

Nella...don't sell my cochin boy. I am going to get him from you when you next come up to Lexington. Hera is not growing anymore...DH and I both think she is where she is inbetween. He is a good sized boy right?

If the eggs were cracked Nella...a chicken will eat them but not necessarily be an egg eater. If someone cracks one with their feet accidentially...all my girls dive for the egg but none of them will crack an egg and eat it on purpose.

Tim...I kept the injured chick in the brooder with its broodermates...no one picked on him. When I took him back to Sarah's last evening...he went right in the brooder with everyone, even bigger chicks. There was the normal "new guy to pick at" stuff but within 2 - 3 minutes that was all over. No one messed with his wing at all. I would say keep it with its mates unless they begin picking at it. But the injury itself is no reason to cull unless it is a show bird. Sarah is keeping her little lavender boy with half wing to use for breeding because he is a good looking boy and the partial wing missing will not stop him from doing his job. So really it is up to you, it will take a little extra TLC for a week or so but then all should be fine.

Here is the little one I took care of for her:

I should have taken pics of him before I took him home. But he looked perfectly normal except half that wing is gone.

Aw come on Tim. Give the poor wee thing a chance! Cetawin is right. Injury is no reason to cull, unless there's no hope of recovery. And by the sounds of it, this little girl can make a full recovery.

As you already know, cuz I've said it often enough, I suck at breed identification when they're this small....so, what breed is the little injured chick? How old is she now? When did the injury happen? She looks as though it has been at least a few days. I'd say definitely give her at least another 2 weeks. What could it hurt? Obviously she caries a great deal of luck with her already. To have survived whatever attacked her is mute testament to that much!

Kathy we suffer the same problem I see.

Playing with and caring for the birds is a full-time job...pay stinks but the benefits are great.

Here are a couple of my blue Orps (from Dick Horstman stock). They have pretty lacing, I think.
