Don't forget to breed for vigor

Definitely! And if they're not vigorous, they won't survive, simple as that, right? I don't know much about how Rosecombs are for breeding, but I hope that they'll pass on good traits to the Sebrights and make for useful and beautiful crosses. All the F1s will be solid blues, no lacing. In F2 I should start to get some lacing and whatnot and that's where things will get fun. Haha.

So, we entered our golden sebright in the county fair this week and he took a blue ribbon. However, there were other sebrights there as well and they all had rose combs. Ours has a straight comb. Are there two different kinds of sebrights? My sebright is my avatar.

No, there is only one comb type with Sebrights and that is rose comb. Yours has a single comb, which normally would have disqualified it.

ummm not too sure why this little guy was not disqualified other than the fact the judges were completely and utterly clueless:( Hes a cool looking rooster but not for showing. Good for you though that you got a ribbon. I wouldnt try to breed him either unless its just for your own pets.

Quote: Well it was a county fair..... This year at our county fair we had some college graduate judge our birds and all she ever did was collegiate judging. I didn't mind her judging the production characteristics, but when she placed a pair of BBRed OEGB as the Grand Champion Pen of Poultry (meaning out of chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys) and the rooster wasn't even dubbed, that really ticked me off. And we usually have APA licensed judges at our county fair. Ugh, people...

The standard of perfection is one thing, and a competition is another thing. do they ever withhold prizes cause there are no perfect birds in the competition?.
Have you ever seen a perfect bird?
the judges are there to utilize their opinion, who wins is their choice, they chose to give her a blue ribbon i think it is awesome...

It is an interesting question ... how the standard of perfection and rules about automatic disqualifications are applied at various competitions. Hopefully this question can be applied in a way that encourages, rather than discourages, people taking an interest in competitions.

I am new to this thread. I have 2 hatchery sebrights that I bought at TSC. They are 20 weeks old. I have one girl and one boy. My question is, has anyone had thier rooster start to become mean? Ours used to be just fine then he started attacking people. Now my kids won't go in our chicken run to handle any of our other chickens. He has also come after me as well. Now my 11 year old daughter closes them up at night and goes into the coop and picks him up and holds him. He doesn't really like it much but he lets her. Of course it is her rooster too. Could it be just his age or am I going to have to cull him? I was hoping to let him breed with his little lady sebright but not if this keeps going. Although I do have a little cochin who is sitting on some of her eggs and some of our little sebrights eggs.

Our little rooster.
Our little girl.
