I agree ~ there are many more people with good shipping stories than bad ones. We just seem to hear about the bad ones.

I am sorry you are having a bad experience and hope that your little ones arrive soon ~ alive and healthy!

I would share your disappointment with McMurray. You can pick a different post office. Maybe you should consider this.

We just received our shipment last week on a Monday. Our chicks were shipped the previous Friday .. from Iowa to VT. By the time they arrived at our PO on Monday, I had 6 dead ones. Within a day, out of 84 sent, only 59 survived. I don't blame the po.. am a bit surprised the hatchery shipped over a weekend. But that being said, called the hatchery and they refunded our $, no problems what so ever.

You people order chicks from Iowa to Kentucky in the dead of winter, and then you want to blame the hatchery and the post office???

I assumed the hatchery knew what they were doing or they wouldn't offer them up for sale to certain locations at that time of year. I now know how long it will take and will not order from that company during hot or cold months. However, I now also know that how they are packed is very important and would really like to know why the first chicks I received were not packed properly for the weather. Last Spring an order took 3 days to get to me from within my own state because the hatchery botched the mailing label and put the wrong zip code. Bad things can happen any time of year.

I received my order of 25 chicks (+ 2 free ones) yesterday morning with no losses. I was notified on Sunday by McMurray that they were shipping and the post office called me on Monday at 8 am before they even opened. I live in western NC. My chicks are doing beautifully. I wouldn't hesitate to use McMurray again. Mail order, particularly in cold months, may not be a good choice for you because of your postal service. You probably have some good local hatcheries in your region. Your county extension agent may be able to tell you where to go.

I am very sorry for all those who have the disappointment of receiving a shipment of dead chicks. I certainly had that fear since these were my first chicks and fully expected some losses.

I have to agree, Ideal is a fantastic hatchery. We stock our feed and seed store with chicks from Ideal, and while one or two of several hundred arrive dead, I imagine it is not an issue with the hatchery. Not to mention they will credit you for the DOA's!

My order of 25 to bay area, ca arrived allive but had several weak chicks with 3 dying off that day. The early, cold, and long journey must have been pushing the limits.

sometimes if you use a different PO it makes all the difference in the world here in the city of chesapeake our PO's are clueless about handling chicks but just across the state line in NC ag country the PO workers have chickens and are quiet knowledgable about them

i don't blame the hatchery
because chicks are really fragile. i just received my shipment the 6th of this month and 1 was dead out of 27 and 5 more died within a couple of days. Now they are doing just fine. It's just something that happens. Also i think some breeds are more fragile than others.. especially the bantams. i think the bigger chicks trample on them. here is a picture of the ones i just received on the 6th.

I honestly can't believe all the people that blame a hatchery for something that is clearly a postal service problem!! You ordered them in the winter so you take the risk. Not trying to be mean but just sayin'!!
