Second order from McMurray, DEAD

My first shipment last week- 5 lived. This morning the mailman called and said I had a box of dead chicks. ALL of them. I will NEVER buy from McMurray again as this was VERY traumatizing to my kids (and me).

I got my very first order of chicks from McMurray this weekend too and I did not lose a single one. I knew that it was a long weekend so I made arrangements to pick them up at the distribution center in my state. I called McMurray ahead of time and asked them which distribution center my chicks would arrive to. Then I called the distribution center myself and told them I wanted to get them there instead of wait to be shipped to my local post office. With USPS, you need to be persistent and make sure you know where they are going to be and when. I probably called the distribution center 5 times asking about my chicks. They probably thought I was annoying but I don't care, all of my chicks lived because of my persistencey. It's not the hatchery's fault that the chicks are taking so long to get to people's homes. It's the post office's. McMurray is having issues with shipments to some southern and eastern states because USPS is slacking and not rushing the orders. People need to start making more phone calls and doing more research on when and where their chicks are going to be so we can start preventing these deaths from happening because right now it seems that USPS could care less about our darling little feather babies. Happy chick raising everyone!

That would be the Post Offices fault. You could call them, though I'm not sure how much good it would do. I'm sorry about your chicks. :( That's really disappointing.

I live in Ringgold, GA and I received my order from Murray McMurray yesterday. All 27 healthy and happy...running around a peeping like mad!

Well Fourgirlsoneboy, now you can see that it's not McMurray creating the problem. You stated they shipped on a long weekend, Duh. Well, try telling the eggs not to hatch because of the weekend. They hatch and are shipped, regardless of weekends. PO centers work around the clock, planes fly every day. It wasn't McMurray that killed your birds, it was the time it took the PO to get them to you. Don't order from them if you wish, but you'll experience the same issue with another hatchery if the PO takes it's time delivering the box. If your kids are so sensitive to the death of a chick, you might want to incubate eggs to show them the hatching process and make them more comfortable with the life death sequence.

I am so sorry for your losses! It can be traumatic...
I have never had that happen, thankfully, but I did talk with my kids before ordering chicks the first time and explained to them that it COULD happen.I always remind them each time how fragile the chicks can be. I think it's important to prepare them ahead of time.Since I have made the kids aware of the fragility of these little cuties, they are always watching for any changes in their behavior. Both of my younger kids can and have detected problems early enough to be corrected in chicks.

I think it's horrible that it can and does happen to people every year but I also think preparing your kids is a big thing. In fact, I think that MPC actually recommends you NOT bring small kids to the PO with you to pick up chicks because of it being a possibility.
I personally do not think that fault lies with the hatchery...it's the PO. Why WOULDN'T the hatchery want them to arrive alive?? Bad business to ship people dead bodies!

Anyway, sorry for your losses...hope you get enjoyment out of your next venture with chicks

My 12 year old son asked me on the way to the post office where we would bury the ones that didn't make it. Sounds gross, but at least he was prepared. So far, they are all still alive. I have one that appears to be having seizures now though. She is smaller than the others, but stil hanging in there for now.
