Self-Blue Cochin Bantams

Exactly Gail. Interesting how the same variety has different names depending on the breeds. Also interesting that a Dark Brahma and a Dark Cornish are nothing alike as far as color goes. Fun stuff.

I have always been a lurker on this thread and just wanted to chime in as a Lavender/Self Blue Silkie Breeder! Lavender is just a nickname for Self Blue, but it is the same thing. When developing "Lavender" silkies it is what everyone called them and just seemed to stick. When we submitted them for approval with the APA the variety passed, but as Self Blue not "lavender". People still call them lavenders since it is habit, but the reasoning APA accepted them as Self Blue is because it is NOT a new color, it does exist in other breeds (OEGB for example) .

So....long story short, Self Blue is the accepted color, "lavender" is the pet name. Hope this helps! Now I am back to lurking and watching the amazing progress you have all been making in the past few years! I am most interested in the feather quality since that is not something we deal with in silkies. Keep up the good work!

When did the breed club elect to go with Self-Blue?

To be 100% correct, the breed club didn't elect to go with anything as far as Self-Blue Cochins go. Once we get to the point where we want to organize a qualifying meet, which I am about 100% sure I'll coordinate, we'll cover that, but as you can see by rilly10's post, since Self-Blue is already a recognized color, it makes no sense to call them anything but Self-Blue, as the APA did with the Self-Blue Silkies. There are other things required for the qualifying meet besides just the numbers in the show and the 5 breeders. You have to put up money to offset the required changes in the standard, and you have to submit the proposed textual changes to the standard, which will be easy, since the shape description is the same and we can refer to the Self-Blue color description, which is already in the standard. That hasn't even been broached with Cochins International, although, I may bring it up as new business at the Crossroads meeting, just so the club knows my intent, but we are still 5 - 6 years from that qualifying meet taking place.

I have four Self-Blues entered at Crossroads just to get some visibility on the progress to date.

Just curious who's asking the question? One of the things I don't like about screen names or whatever they are called is that you never know who you are talking to.

I apologize for my poor chocie of words and the confustion I have caused. I probably should have said it's just best to use whichever term your respective breed club uses or prefers.

I just read through this entire thread and I must say I am extremely impressed with the progress! These guys are just gorgeous and I would love to have some someday.

Tom, I'd love to talk to you about adult birds for sale (other colors), prices and if you ship. I'll send you a PM.

That is wonderful! Wish I was going. Maybe I can try to get there.

I entered 2 cockerels and 2 pullets in order to get some visibility on where they are as far as type and color. They were in a good spot for that, right at the end of the row, on the inside of the aisle. I have distributed Self-Blues to two other breeders and will add another 3 or 4 breeders next fall. Intent is to hold a qualifying meet for them in 2018.

They are wonderful! You have made amazing progress!
I hope I will have some to show in 2018. I have 5 F1s and one of my foundation stock hens has gone broody for the first time. Looks like I will have little ones to over-winter.
I am very excited to have even a small part in this color.
