Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Thanks Bren!!!! Thats a great idea! I have two pens and I will keep the two best roos and switch the best roo from pen to pen. Thanks! Ohh and how big of a pen do you keep your 5 hens in?

It depends on where I have room to put them in. The smallest area would be 6 x 5 roughly. That is probably larger than you need. My large enclosed pens are cut in half and thirds with portable pet fences. I know you have seen those gold colored ones you can buy. I pick them up when I find them used to shape as I need. They are 24 inches high. Tall enough to nearly always keep the silkies in and I can step over. I have one big 10 x 20 pen divided up into 5 areas. Then I have another 10 x 10 dog kennel pen divided in three areas. One is nearly half the pen while the other two are smaller. In each one of those I do have a cockerel right now with 5 or 6 hens/pullets. The largest ones also has much younger birds not yet mature and able to blend in.

I have two areas with whites that are 10 x 5 within a large 10 x 10 enclosed pen. I move one very good cockerel from one to the other. On one side I have 5 show girl hens and on the other I have 4 white silkie hens. I always breed silkie to showgirl so this work well with one guy. These are fairly large and I will probably move some young whites in there soon to grow out. I always have to watch to be sure none of the younger birds are being bullied and are eating and drinking like they should. So it can be a much smaller area for breeding or if I have the extra room they get a BIG pen until I need grow out space for the started chicks.

The nice thing about my portable fencing is I can take it down...divide it more if I need more areas to seperate ages or colors for breeding. Silkies are so easy to work with since they rarely get over a very high divider. I do have to rearrange at times with I have a really agressive cockerel/rooster who insists on taking on more than his assigned share.

Thats good! I have two 6X4 breeding pens and a 4X8 grow out pen with an attached run. Ohh and I was thinking about using those dog pen thingys too! We have a couple of them for our dogs that I may use also. So the 24in high ones will work? I cant wait until I start breeding mine! They look amazing right now!

Just wanted to post a pic of my Lavender rooster, "Mr. Drysdale". He came from "Soozin" in New York. Please give me your thoughts and comments on him. He looked kind of rough and almost ugly when I got him and I was kind of disappointed (sorry Soozin) but he matured into a nice bird, or at least I think so!

Also, here is a pic of one of the chipmunk striped chicks that I hatched from the Lav. roo and a supposedly black/lav. split hen. I wrote a thread about them a few days ago. This pair also produced a few blacks and a white chick. I am sure this black hen has a few other color genes in her genetics!

Hi slaney! I'm glad you posted this picture! I have been wanting to see him and I think he's just beautiful. I've been busy with this heat all of August and forgot to check back here... I love pictures!!!
That little Partridge/Lavender split??? is cute too... I bet she will turn out real nice when she gets to be about 6 months. I'd like to see a picture of her then!

I've got a few Black splits growing up and a few I'm hoping are Lavender. I think there are a few pics on my July-Aug page... I can't wait to see if Pevarti is Lavender, but time will tell.

I've got a rooster named Milarky that looks a lot like the color of Gator. Can't wait to see if he produces Lavender, but I don't have any Splits with him yet... They are still growing up or are with Tex and Faux.

Love all the pics! Keep them coming... GypsyChick... you have a cute blue boy picture?

The weather is going to start getting cooler soon!!!

Hey! As y'all can see I'm catching up on all the posts....Not to be a bearer of bad news, but I had one boy to be a nice light even Lavender until he was 7 months old and then got darker feathers in his hackle and back... His wings were Lavender.... Very cute, but feisty...
So was he a Lavender or not, based on that? Bren?
I can't remember if it was more than the ones I have now.... I'll go look up a picture...
Y'all have a great day!

Bobbi,

The Lavender Roosters tend to have the darker coloring in their hackles. Bren says it might just be a male issue. Both of mine have the darker in their hackles, except for my Showgirl Rooster, but of course he doesn't have any hackles.
