yes because the roo should be 100% lav so anything he nates with will give off splits...1/2 his genetics and 1/2 moms:)

The roo is only split lav himself...so that's considered 100%?

Wait is the roo your getting Lavender or Split? If its Lavender ALL babies will be split if he is split then all the babies are canidates to be splits, but breed back the pullets and mark which eggs come from which hen and see which are genetically splits.

no he is not 100% hes 50% lav. Then breed to black hen-( or hens or your choice) keep track of them and the progeny chicks can be mated back to dad-you may get a lav chick or two from that second generation cross. But if you kept back crossing you should get pure lavs as the genetics get stronger.

I know right? I had a lav bird before I even knew it was lav?? I know I know...Then I reseached and thought hmm ok I want a really pretty lav hen-ok the one I chose was 350$ I said umm hmm Ill start small and buy a nice balck hen or 4-so that what I did-and been playing with it ever since to get the 1 stinking lav pullet! By Fall I should have them producing lav babies can't wait!

Hoping to join this thread soon. I purchased a pair of Spilt Lav silkies on sunday.

A blue rooster, and a really dark blue hen or a black. Not sure.

No eggs yet. But moved them to their new coop, and hopefully they will begin popping out some lav eggs soon. They are excellent, so I expect no less from their chicks. I wasn't really interested in lav silkies, but now thats it's actually with in hope, I'm getting really excited.

Now I have whites, and B/B/S of some nice silkies. But the darn things won't lay! lol. Stinkers.

Well I asked my parents and they were like no more untill

1. Finish the coop.
2. Wait till fairs over
3. Get everything cleaned up from the storm

So.. looks like I have a while to wait and research more and more!

As a side note. There was a pen with like 20 roosters in it. It was pouring rain, and my friend was with me and whining. And I couldn't make up my mind which one to take home. Now that it's dry and I've be able to look more at the choice, I'm not sure if I picked the best one or not. But I am happy with what I got. I just wish I had longer to debate, and their weren't all soaking wet. There are only a couple things that could be better with him. But there are no perfect birds, and he compliments my hens awesomely! I am very pleased.

There was a lavender rooster there which I regret terribly about not bringing home. That could of jump started my project greatly. But his crest was much smaller, his comb was redder, his tail was lower set, his toes weren't perfect, and they told me he was awfully mean and attacked.... Must keep telling myself this, must keep telling myself this.

If only I had an empty pen I would of got him just for an extra.

Wah. If anything I could of sold him on eggbid. The going prices for lavenders are still crazy. And here I thought they had went down.
