Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Sorry, I may have said that wrong. I DID have them together only because I wasn't planning on breeding til Spring. When I decided that I wanted eggs now from my Black/Lav splits I seperated them and they've been in their own coop for about 10 days now by themselves. I was just saying that people recommend waiting 3-4 weeks after seperation to make sure that the hen is only fertilized by my split cockerel. I'm getting eggs from them now and my friend wanted a few chicks. What I was thinking was that if I incubate these eggs now, theres a chance that some....or all....or none, may be from the Blue roo (since its only been 10 days). I was just wondering if I'll be able to tell the difference at hatch so I can give her the "mutts" and me keep the pure Lavs. I'm not too worried about the Splits right now. So what I'm asking if I'll be able to tell the difference at hatch whether or not a chick is 100% Lav and not a Blue mix. Sorry for making this confusing. I don't plan on ever mixing my splits or Lavs with any other color than Black. This just happened because they were penned together temporarily. Thanks!

If you get Lav chicks at hatch, they will be a light (gray) color. Look a lot like baby splash chicks. So if they are fertil chicks from the Blue, you could get Splash or your Lavs at hatch if they are light gray in color. So if you give away the dark color chicks (Black or Dark Blue) and keep the "lighter" one's you should be ok.

Great, sounds like a plan. Also, when they get a little older it will be easy to tell a Splash from a Lav so that makes it easy! Thanks

Not if it is splash AND lavender (Bl/Bl lav/lav).

Oh no lol. Guess this won't be easy then. Any definite way to tell them apart? I thought Lav was recessive? and if it were Splash, the Lav would be hidden and only the Splash color would show. No matter how many times I read about genetics, most of it don't make any sense to me. I should go to school for it lol

Yes, lavender will not show if not present in two copies. But, even if lav IS present in two copies, if blue is also present in either one or two copies, the bird will look more like the blue or splash phenotype than like lavender. In a blue you will see darker head, hackles, etc. In a splash you will see darker splashes.

Thanks Sonoran! Either I'll just hatch them for the next 2 weeks and give all of the chicks to her or I'll just wait...period. I wish I could tell the 100% Lavs from the Blue or Splash colors...then I'd do it. I don't want to make any mistakes though and keep something that might not be 100% pure Lav in color.

Ok, I'm on page 129 now and Im cross-eyed and have a headache. I want to post pics of 2 Lav chicks I just got (about 3 months old). From what I've been reading, and I may be wrong....but if I did read right, then one or both of my birds have Blue in it? Because of the different colors? The 1st 2 pics are of the darker one and the next 2 are the lighter one, but still different colors? They both also have a tiny bit of "brassiness" (I may not be using the correct term) in them.

Thinking the first one looks like it is blue (could be lav/blue) and the second one looks lavender... to me!

Loving the conversation about funny colors. Thought I'd share this year’s oddball.

We only have a lavender rooster... lavender hens... black hens... and a lone buff gal.

This one is a mystery. She looks mostly buff with grey splotches/streaks throughout.

She is about three months old and so sweet!

P.S. Keep up to date on our facebook page... we will have a few bearded and non-bearded lavender pairs avaliable soon...
