It's not abnormal, but not all birds do it that way, and they may alter their own "style" of molting from one molt to the next. I've seen birds at a show whose cages looked like the remnants of a hawk attack--just a major molt at a majorly inconvenient time.

Suze...remember the bantam auracana female at Shawnee that shed over 1/2 her feathers in her show cage?

I've got one of those "let's just get this over with" birds. Everything was fine a couple of days ago when I opened the coop in the morning, when I went in later it looked like a bird had exploded. She's got chicks with her and its got to be miserable for her and the chicks because she's full of quills.

I think I missed that one, but it is pretty much what I meant. I've certainly seen it happen at enough other shows. I've clerked and had a judge comment more than once "this one's starting to blow." Happens at our State Fair ALL the time.

OUCH! Not sure whether I sympathize with the chicks or her the most--they can at least move away from her. But imagine getting stabbed by mommy every time you try to cuddle under her wing or belly!

quick question but does a bird Molting effect its showing? does it loose points for it?

Hi~ya Guys!

We took a few pictures yesterday of two of our 'keepers' from last years hatching.

Lazarus and Emma.

Laz is named as such because he choked on something and promptly died. My sweet husband gave him mouth to mouth and did chest compressions until he came back to life.

He walked in circles for a few days but now he seems to be as right as rain... now if he only would start to like the ladies a little more!

Can't tell from this picture but his crest is HUGE for a lavender boy. Three times the size of our current rooster Abraham. So exciting.

Probably not officially, but molting is a part of conditioning as thus a bird in molt is not going to place as well as a bird of similar quality that is not molting.

WOW what a story. You have an awesome HUBBY! I cant even imagine how hard it must have been to give mouth to beak and how lucky he is that you were there to save him. Great story! He is a beauty

Another reason why it does is it can make a bird look like it doesn't have as much crest or cushion as it has when it is NOT molting. A white cock of mine that did so well in the fall looked horrid at Stevenson because half his cushion was pinfeathers about 1/2 an inch long. If I showed you pictures of him from the fall, when he was just about a year, and now, you wouldn't think they were the same bird. He's not a 'blow all the feathers at one' molter, he's slow and a little at a time. I think we're on the upswing now, but he started molting at the Monroe, WA show. At least with the reduction in cushion and crest volume, fertility from him has gone up.
