Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Hi! I agree with using the split or a super black to cross on.
So far I have never used Lav to Lav, but probably be because I didn't have a lav roo with the hens, I have just always used good old Cuss and was always pleased with the chicks.
Here is a pic of one of his pullets that was always following me around.
I was taking pics of Paints and she just HAD to have her picture taken.

I think this is the only chicken I ever sold that I really miss. She was such a sweetheart.
BUT the good news I have some chicks of her mothers and sired by Cuss so maybe I'll be luck enough to get some siblings of hers.

Oh, I did not mean to overlook the question about the Lavender gene. It is really a self blue gene, and I don't know for sure where it came from.
I know it breeds true and some of the lines are hard to hatch and the mortality of chicks and eggs is high in some of the lines.
It seems using a split is better and the quality and vigor is better too. [just my opinion from observation]

I just took some pics of the babies, they all had to run and dodge me, right through the water....so feet look weird.

Sigrid referred to Lav as a mutation that was discovered in the early '70s. Breeding Lav/Lav to Lav/Lav very quickly results in feather problems so using splits is always a good idea.

I like the ones from your paint pen and the ones on the top, Oh and the other 2 as well. Poor Hubby now he is going to have to help me find Lavender Silkies, they can hang out with my Lav Orpingtons LOL. Great Job on the breeding.

If the parents are both truly "splash" (Bl/Bl) the only possibility is splash. Perhaps one of the parents is really just light blue to the point of looking splash? Which makes blue a possibility. Or perhaps this chick is a dark splash with spots washed out because with splash on splash breeding, the spots disappear. I suspect the latter.

Lavender is a completely different gene - only expresses from lavender parents. Has to be lavender on both sides to get it expressing, either split for lavender (one copy) or full on lavender.
