Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes

I also have dingy whites due to well water. It drives me crazy. I am still using up my store bought detergent and have not tried the home made kind. Just this morning I bought some of the blueing that was recommeded to see if it helps whiten my whites.

Thanks for the info. We did have a problem with dinginess on our whites (we have very hard water). We go a softener which pretty much cleared that up. I have had a problem since June with breaking out in hives and swelling and the Dr.'s here can't seem to tell me what it is. I've spent alot of money with no answers to this problem so I thought maybe getting to more natural, homemade products might help. They say it's some kind of allergy but no way to isolate it. So I guess I've lined their pockets and I have to find the answer. This sounds like one of the things I need to do. I'm trying to avoid anything pre-packaged and trying to rid my household of as many preservatives as possible. I'm going out today to get the ingredients to make the laundry detergent and see. I can't be miserable for the rest of my life and look like a puffy strawberry! Thanks again.

justmyluck - have they done allergy test? My DD is allergic to of all things oranges. They like to have never found it but they finally (after 3 test) discovered the culprit.

I asked about seeing an allergist and the Family Dr. wanted to send me to a Dermatologist. He wanted to try drugs and see if we could control the rashes that way. I was sick of steroids and all of the drugs and decided I would rather know the cause and not just take pills to cover up the problem. I guess that this may not have been the decision they wanted. All they would offer is medication. So my only option is to try and figure it out for myself. We are self pay, so the Dr.'s want don't want to do much even though we pay for anything they do at each visit. I tried staying away from all of my animals first. Stayed away for 3 weeks, no feeding (DH did it for me), no loving, no petting, and at the end of 3 weeks I was still rashy and swollen and miserable and so were my furry and feathered babies. I am determined to figure it out though. I just have a gut feelling it is something in the additive or preservative area, not sure why, but it can't hurt to cut out as much of that junk as I can.

What changed in your diet, routine or activities since May 1?

If you started showing hives and rashes in June, back up at least 30 days and figure out what you changed. Did you change brands of some product?

Once you figure out what changed, was stopped or added..... there are several steps you can take. Analyze labels. What's in the product you Were Using, versus what's in the one you use now? Are the order of ingredients the same for both? Sometimes just the amount of some ingredients changing will cause sensitive / alergic people to begin showing symptoms.

I developed an alergy as a kid to laundry and body soaps of all things, including Ivory. I ended up having to use Baby Shampoo not only for hair but as a body wash as well. All my clothes had to be washed in low-sudsing laundry soap. Couldn't use Fabric Softener of any kind for years. Became quite a hassle. I'll still have breakouts from time to time, tho not as bad. Still have to use Shampoo instead of body soap / wash, but that's no big deal. I could use Home-made soap that my Grandma made every year as well.

Stress can also bring on hives and rashes in some people, as well as changing medications or vitamins. If your immune system has been comprimised by illness, that can do it too.

If you have any questions, just shoot me a note, and I'll try to help if I can.

Hope this Helps,

Kathy

Haven't been able to think of anything that I have changed. I am a hairdresser, so I have been sure to wear gloves whenever I am in contact with chemicals. Have not used any new products at work, and the problem is not just on my hands. I have tried to think of any new products that I have used at home, and tried to see if any of the brands that I normally use had changed their formulas. No luck yet, but that is why I thought making my own products such as the laundry soap may help. As I said, can't hurt. Maybe I will try the baby shampoo idea, I never thought of that, but it is worth a shot. Thanks for the thoughts, they are so much appreciated.

Sorry to interrupt the recipe lists (my recipe folder in my favorites list grew today!) but I have a quick question about the homemade laundry soap and fabric softener...I went to the store to buy the ingredients to make the powdered version..got tired of looking through the shelves so just asked a worker lady there...I told her what I was looking for and why, she had to call someone else as she was new. Long story short by the time they helped me find what I was looking for, I got questioned and grilled to death about my umm baby bump and asked if I was going to use this "homemade" (they used air quotes when they said it) soap to wash my baby clothes......

So my question for you guys is: Is it safe to use on the baby clothes and blankets and such?? I would really hate to see my laundry bill after buying that really expensive Dreft brand.

Thanks and again sorry for interrupting.
