Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes

This recipe is not so much self-sufficient as it is frugal. I love the smell better than febreeze which makes my throat itch. And this is so much cheaper to make.

FAUX FEBREEZE

* 1 1/2-4 tablespoons ultra downy clean breeze fabric softener
* 25 ounces water (I use distilled which is recommended or at least filter what you have)
* 32 ounces spray bottle, new and clean

Put Downy and water in bottle and spray on furniture, carpeting, pillows, shower curtains. Before using all over do a fabric test, spray small amount in an area where it cannot be seen. I personally have never had a problem using this and it staining even on whites, I have been using for four years without issue.

Here is another to try for dingy whites.

FAUX OXY CLEAN

* 1 cup hot water
* 1/2 cup baking soda
* 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide

Just soak the clothing in it for 20 minutes to overnight and then wash as usual. (You can do this in your machine after it has filled or use a bucket.
This will not harm fabric like bleach.
Have not noticed any color fading either.
I would test this first on something you would not be heartbroken over if it didn't work, but I have never had a problem and the recipe states it will even take out old blood.

So my question for you guys is: Is it safe to use on the baby clothes and blankets and such?? I would really hate to see my laundry bill after buying that really expensive Dreft brand.

I've not made this laundry detergent yet, but also have all the ingredients to do so. That being said, The only thing I would question about using it for baby's things is it's harshness. I 'think' it would be less harsh than most, if not all, 'ready made' brands, with exception of the Dreft.

However, I'm sure there are a good many folks out there who would have a FAR better answer for you than I.

I'm curious, too. (And, congrat's on the baby!)

Borax box actually says to soak baby clothes & gives directions on how to do so on the box. But nothing about how to use the Baking (Washing) Soda or the FelsNaptha on the packages for baby clothes. So atleast you can use the Borax Baby clothes cleaning instructions that are listed on the box to help with stains. Sorry I don't know any other info.

Bread and Butter Pickles

1 large red onion – sliced
4 large cucumbers – sliced
1large bell pepper – sliced
6 cloves garlic – sliced
3-cup water
3-cup cider vinegar
4-1/2 cups sugar
2 heavy pinches kosher salt
1-1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1-1/2-teaspoon turmeric
1-1/2-teaspoon celery seeds

Put the vegetable slices in a large bowl and combine. Tightly pack the vegetables into 2 (1/2 gallon) clean spring-top jars. (I got mine at WalMart for $5.00)

Combine the remaining ingredients in a non-reactive saucepan over high heat stirring occasionally; bring to a boil. When mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat to low, put the lid on the saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes.

Slowly pour the hot pickling liquid over the vegetables, completely filling the jars. Wad up a piece of wax paper and place it on top of the vegetables and push it down then close the jar. The wax paper will keep the vegetables submerged in the pickling liquid.

Refrigerate.

I'm glad you tried it, it's an amazing little remedy isn't it?

I finally found out how my grandmother used to make her cough syrup in the turnip...she just packed a hollowed out turnip with brown sugar and put the top back on to let it sit. It will turn into a syrup. It works amazingly well on any kind of coughs including whooping coughs and asthma. It clears your bronchials really well

NO but please let me know if you try them. I always use the soaps that are free of aditives so if these work I would love to try them.

I ended up ordering some, I will let you know in a few days when I do laundry.

It seems like such a cool idea to make your own laundry detergent. I think I'll try it when I run out. Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but has anyone added anything to change the smell of it? Like essential oils or anything?
