September 2015 Hatch-A-long!!

Mine was for humidity purposes, not for drinking.

All I do for humidity is spray water in the plug holes with a spray bottle. I always worried that chicks would fall in water dishes or that they would hatch at night and the humidity would get too high. I have been dry hatching and our humidity sits about 40% so 4 sprays every 24 hours will keep it about 55 or slightly higher.

Ooooio. Lol I wet a papertowel with warm water and it lasts all day. It seems to work pretty well and holds it at 65-70%.

My last hatch BC I was afraid they would drown, one of the first chicks we bought fell asleep in the waterer and drowned (she was know alone for an hour and that was my first break that I took in two days) I think using a bowl with high enough sides works great if you have the room. I've used a country crock dish before to put a chick in that was much later than the rest. I don't see why you couldn't put water in it instead. Outside some folder up wet paper towels work well too. I had some of these my last hatch but my dear sweet little oegb decided to cuddle with and roost on them. I also had a small bowl with a sponge in it in the bator. Beware I would not put that in there until there are some beginning to hatch as it too my humidity up to the upper 80s and it spiked into the 90s at one point. And we don't want to drown babies. But if you're handling problems getting humidity up its great. Both my babies came out in 24 once I got the humidity up above 60 which had them having a bit of trouble.

Adding a sponge will work great in raising humidity. Rice in a small bowl is great for absorbing humidity if it gets too high.
Not a great idea to add .. bowls of water. I've heard so many people say that they ..can't..get their humidity up. Do you have a really good thermometer that reads the humidity? More often than not those don't read right. So, if you have all of the wells filled, and can keep them filled, usually that works just fine. Remember this, you do NOT want any condensation on the windows..means too much humidity.

As for the talk about humidity, I do have a sponge that I pour water on along with the dishes, all for humidity purposes. I also have a dish of vermiculite. It holds humidity for a long time but you can't drown in it. I got it for my reptiles, but so far it works for chicks too. I'm on lock down and mine is at 60% right now.

Oh, by the way, for those of you guys hatching marans eggs... Please don't shoot the messenger, but Marans always has an S on the end. Even a single chick is a Marans.
(I only point it out because I'm nicer than some folks on the Marans threads. If you ever visit one and call it a maran, they can get rude!)
