That's awesome that you have at least one chick

I think the 'heavy' eggs were actually just more solid (as in full of chick) but that if you had actually weighed them they would have been lighter. I know what you mean by saying it felt heavier. Its also important to note that if a egg started off with a higher mass than a different egg there weight loss would be different.

Either way im interested to see if it is the 'heavier' feeling eggs that hatch.

e have another 2 little ones out of the shells! Around 4-5 p.m. I went into the coop and saw one of Henrietta's eggs open (Henrietta is one of th ehens whose eggs were adopted and brooded by Mima the silkie mama hen). Henrietta is all black with a gold laced hackle necklace, appears to be americauna/EE ,ix (though she lays light brown medium size eggs). That chick is black bodied with a huge cute white butt, no white spot on the (her?) head.
The next egg to hatch right after, it had to have been, the 2nd, looked to be another Henrietta egg. I held the chick for one or two seconds but put it back quickly too. It was still wet and adorably sticky ;-) Black and white coloring that may be more speckly but hard to tell with the sticky hairdo.
After that it was too dark outside to be able to see anything which I'm sure Mima appreciated, lol.
So I "tucked them in" (left them alone) for the night. I hope to be up around sunrise to see who has gotten out of eggs and who is still trying. Of the 9 eggs that felt to have chicks in them (not the light weight one), I've seen 3 chicks. I hope we have 6 more beauties to be coming out of eggs into the world under the mama hen!

Today is day 18 and we are on lockdown! I also got the webcam set up that way I can check on the eggs throughout the day when I am at school when we get a little closer to hatching time! Wouldn't be possible for me currently as I have the incubator set up in the ensuite that isn't being used (to keep it safe and away from the dogs and cats). I have my brooder set up in the room attached to it atm but plan on moving the brooder to the shed once all chicks are hatched. No chicks have fully hatched as of this morning when I left for work though, just pips. I wish I did have a webcam set up so I could see how they are going throughout the day.... ah well. Something I could think about for next time

Let us know when when they have started hatching so I can check out the streaming

Hi, I'm back reporting that so far it appears that one very hearty and loud chick has hatched (I'm 99% certain from MIma's silike egg). It is grey in color so it's so difficult to see under the splash mom hen! BTW this was one of the "heavy" eggs. The size of the open shell indicates it definitely is not the light white egg!
I'm watching, listening and waiting for more newcomers.
I'll post as I note progress.

@South OH Chicks what kind of marans do you have? that's so exciting! I'm a little nervous about mine since i haven't candled them...hope some turn out!

Wouldn't be possible for me currently as I have the incubator set up in the ensuite that isn't being used (to keep it safe and away from the dogs and cats). It worked out perfectly where I have one of the webcams where you plug it in to your USB port instead of it being built in because I just turned a mug upside down in the incubator and set the cam on top of that and ran the cord out of the turner cord hole! You can't see all the eggs in there (there's 25 in there) but if there is any peeping we should be able to hear it! I will be sure to post when we get some action!

of the 12 eggs in total, 2 I had marked with X at day 18 as I think they were quitters, 2 have hatched and I can see pips on 6 others. That leaves 2.. which I might just not be able to see in their current orientation.

YIPPEE I have chicks .....hehehhehehehe

Qu: are these ones dry enough to move to the brooder? I can keep the humidity high by making the bathroom they are in steamy before opening

Congrats! Adorable. You can leave them or move them it's up to you. Some people leave them in for 24 hours. I don't open until the end but I'm paranoid. I have had to open it though and steamed up the bathroom too, so that's a perfectly fine idea. Good luck with the rest.

Just wanted to share the good news: Out of 29 eggs from lockdown, I have 20 chicks!

1 of the remaining eggs has pipped mightily but does not look like it will be successful without intervention (no zipping). The other 8 have no real signs of pipping or have pipped only a tiny bit with no other movement. Today (about 30 minutes ago) is day 21. Should I wait for the other 9 eggs or just let the 20 chicks dry off and end the incubation? (One or two started pipping early on day 19 with two hatching right before Day 20).

I started w 35 Delaware eggs from local breeder but only 29 made it to lockdown.

Been fun watching this Sept hatch thread. If anyone has advice about ending incubation or waiting for remaining 9 eggs please let me know!
