and this little turken came from my green egg layer

Coming late to the party, but Blondie, my 6 month old EE hen went broodie after escaping her coop and becoming a "free range" hen! At the time I noticed she was setting, I put some eggs in the incubator... around the 9th of September. But she must have been setting for longer than I thought, because today she has chicks! She is busy caring for her own landrace brood of Buff Brahma/EE's (and, if it hatched, a pure buff brahma, because that hen sneaked an egg into the nest). Looks to be quite a loving mom. And I bought all those Cochin hens to be broodys and I'm not sure any of them are even laying... But I really got the Cochins to hatch turkey eggs, so that will happen next year. Darn though, now I'm going to have to brood those 4 eggs I put in the incubator if they hatch, because they are only day 16... 5 days away from hatching, and won't be able to give them to Blondie. Dagwood is the proud Buff Brahma daddy, but I don't think Blondie has given him the good news yet... Hope they all make it, they are super cute little fellows... Pics to follow, hopefully. The chicken math is happening here! I have 5 week olds that need a coop, and bought some from a place in Utah and they arrived yesterday, unfortunately, without the nuts and bolts required to put them together... Guess visiting the hardware store just became a priority...

yeah 19 chicks are going out to the farm tomorrow the big brooder is set up now, had to set a trap tonight but still think it's the 2 legged kinds that bothered the broody, checked her and all the other chickens out and they were fine, but she's missing about half the eggs, but as a good broody does she drew blood and stayed protecting her remaining eggs, so it's gonna be late night early morning here.

Reason I believe it was a 2 legged is there was juvenile chicks sitting in front of her that weren't bothered, but got eyes on em and a pellet gun, but hopefully they learned their lesson about bothering a broody on eggs. not to many predators will even enter our small area of fenced yard with 2 male dogs and a male cat that have their territory well marked

What in the world???? I just walked into the room to check on the chicks that I still have in the brooder, and I heard peep-peeps coming from the incubator. 3 of those chick's have hatched out and my hatch wasn't due until Friday! A few more eggs in there look like they are trying to hatch out, too! They are from my light tan NN eggs.

well theres a couple options there , either incubator ran on the high end of safe warm or a hen was actually starting to sit on em before they were gathered, mine we 2 days ahead of schedule and it only ran .5 degrees higher than the previous hatch, gotta remember those are baselines and chicks and chickens don't read the rule book lol

Congrats on the surprise chicks though

Well, I did have that broody, but only gave her those 2 marked blue colored eggs to sit on. I collected the other eggs every day.

Thank's! I hope I get a completely NN one this time instead of the bib or bowtie.

well could have been a younger one that's first time broody and not ready to sit 21 days , just started it for you, or you could have been 1 degree higher and they just matured faster at least they are out and safe and sound

Well, whatever the case may be, at least they are hatching out alive, huh? One of them looks like it may be a blue colored one, but I'll have to wait for it to dry and fluff up to tell for sure.
