Last time my broody hatched she only got one chick and I left the mama and the chick in the run with water and food while the others free ranged just until the chick gets strong enoughSo Moma seems to of done a good job today. Wondering how long I should leave her and lockdown with the one check? Can I let her out into the main flock and cut a small access hole just for the little one? Not sure how the other 24 size chickens will do.
Ok so just let them in with the rest? They have a large run for the days and locked in the coop at night. Or keep them in the lock down?Last time my broody hatched she only got one chick and I left the mama and the chick in the run with water and food while the others free ranged just until the chick gets strong enough![]()
I like to keep them a part until the chicks get stronger but if you don't think the other chickens will hurt them and mama will protect then if you just keep a close eye on them. My hen was the bottom of the pecking order is also one of the reasons I kept them a part and there was only one chick. How many breeds did you hatchOk so just let them in with the rest? Yes they are.Me too! I'm a sucker for all black, white, and black & white birds. Are they all Silkie chicks?
I'm picking up two dozen eggs this Saturday! The lady I'm getting them from has Ameraucana's, Maran's, Olive Eggers, Naked Necks, and some other laying breeds. I lost most of my standard sized flock about a month ago, so this is me getting back up on my chicken horse. At least I still have a flock of 20 or so of bantams left. My 'Bater just got up and running a few minutes ago and is currently holding steady! Hopefully it stays this wayAnd chicken math strikes again! Along with the two dozen eggs I'm also picking up two cochin bantam chick's and a chocolate muscovy duckling, all a few days old. She offered some muscovy eggs too! I didn't take her up on the offer, but maybe some day I'll get some from her.
I hope everyone has a whole bunch of fluffy butts soon!![]()
No, it was from a predator attack. My flock did pretty well in the heat, spending their days hunting bugs and chilling in the shade. How did you lose your standard sized flock? Was it from the heat? If so, you're going to like the Naked Necks, and I hope that you will hatch out a few of those!
