September Hatch-A-Long!

I just scored a barely used Hovabator Genesis that I will pick up on Thursday! Tomorrow I pick up my Bielefelder eggs that were shipped from south Texas to North Texas - so hopefully they will fare better than my previous shipped eggs. My mixed batch of local rare breed eggs goes into lockdown on Friday. Eggciting times!

I am happy to report that baby turkey is now on his feet looking fluffy and perfect. :) He is ENORMOUS. I have no idea how he fit into that tiny egg - he had a tiny air sac too, and he certainly filled up all the remaining space! I suspect that was the problem, he was just too big to maneuver a full zip, only the two pips.

Please don't judge me, but I did assist. Since it's my first egg of my first hatch I know people are going to automatically think I jumped the gun... and maybe I did, mother of three via Cesarian section that I am, but I did give him 30+ hours to complete the hatch on his own. Poor little thing pipped and then nothing for well over a day... I could hear him peeping... I have read everything this site offers on assisting, so I felt like I knew what to do, but I was terrified the entire time. I went slowly and applied bacitracin on exposed membrane. The inner membrane looked dark brown and the vessels were shriveled and mostly brown, so I felt it was safe to proceed. The membrane didn't feel tough/leathery, so I don't think the membrane was holding him back. I think it was space. I exposed about a third of baby, and set him back for the last time. Minutes later he gave a final shove and was out. There was poop in his shell, so I think he was definitely ready to be out! I shouldn't say "he"; my 5-year-old has named baby "Rose Chocolate Familia Mountain, Rose for short".

2nd egg is beginning to wiggle again. I am not surprised it's 3 days behind the other - on candling it looked well behind the other.

Awesome! What cuties!! I have what I call the "First Pip Curse" For me the first to pip has either died or had issues with every single hatch :/ I don't know what the deal is with that...

My little "Miracle" was a first pip, too, and needed complete assistance to hatch, she was too weak to do a thing herself. Strange.

Love me some turkeys ! We have 3 we got 6 months ago ! I let them out of there pen and they will follow me everywhere! Trying to find a royal palm chick or eggs to hatch ! Good Job getting that little bugger out of his shell !

22 of my 38 serama eggs went into lockdown this afternoon...so excited...hatch day is friday.

the other 16 lock down on the 12th so two day from today....cant to see what kinda fuzzbutts i get!!

Well I'm one week away from lock down and I'm so saddened by my results so far. I purchased 8 porcelain silkie eggs and not one of them made it :( and those are the ones I REALLY wanted. Our of my 15 bantam cochin eggs I have 13 kicking and growing and out of my 5 EE eggs I have 2 that are great and 1 that I can't see into because the egg is too pourse, but the air sack is growing so I'm holding on to it. Hubby says I'm done with eggs for the year because he doesn't want the chicks to have a hard time hardening off for winter and doesn't want then in the house until March because we already have a BLRW with a hurt leg and 2 house Seramas. Blah!

Just put an orfer in for 4-6Doz. BCM eggs. It'll take a few weeks or more cause she has to swap Roos. 10 more days till lockdown on the ones in the bator now.candled a few again tonight. other than the clears and 3 blood rings from yesterday all seem healthy(except about 3 that I can't tell because of porosity)

well today so far 2 guineas have hatched and another is zipping....they were set on aug. 16th so they are 3 days early....I kinda hope my cream legbars hatch a tad soon!! I'm looking forward to those
The breeder hatched mine for me since he had room in his incubator. So nice of him. 7 of 8 hatched. I have all females maybe 2 males at most. He said most of his breeds hatch 75-90% females. He has no idea why. I happy with my hatch. The are awfully cute.

How many of you hatch in egg cartons? How bout just laying the eggs on their sides? I cannot decide which way to do it. Can the temp on the floor of incubator really vary so much from the temp where egg turner is? I read it can kill the chicks from being too low? Im only on day 10 but im worrying about lockdown!!!
I tried to hatch in a carton twice. Mostly my chicks got stuck. Even when they got out of their own egg they fell into another. One dried into another egg. I had to soak him to get him out. It was cute all of those chicks half out of the eggs.

One of my turkeys hatched! It was a strange one. 2 days early, he pipped, began to zip and then stopped. Then, nothing for 32 hours. Now he is out, but he doesn't look too happy. He is just lying there looking exhausted. If he hears me, he peeps and moves his legs, but nothing else. He is still all wet. It's been three hours since his hatch, but 36 hours since his first pip. Is this normal? Will he just lie there for hours? Should I get him out of the incubator (and give food and water) as soon as he is dry, despite one other egg still being in there? Day 0 is tonight/tomorrow at 2am.

It is my first turkey (and my first hatch, period) so I don't know if he is acting normally or not.

Please help!

What kind of turkeys? I have 4 Red Bourbon eggs that are doing well so far. They have 9 days left.
