September Hatch-A-Long!

I am happy to report that baby turkey is now on his feet looking fluffy and perfect. :) He is ENORMOUS. I have no idea how he fit into that tiny egg - he had a tiny air sac too, and he certainly filled up all the remaining space! I suspect that was the problem, he was just too big to maneuver a full zip, only the two pips.

Please don't judge me, but I did assist. Since it's my first egg of my first hatch I know people are going to automatically think I jumped the gun... and maybe I did, mother of three via Cesarian section that I am, but I did give him 30+ hours to complete the hatch on his own. Poor little thing pipped and then nothing for well over a day... I could hear him peeping... I have read everything this site offers on assisting, so I felt like I knew what to do, but I was terrified the entire time. I went slowly and applied bacitracin on exposed membrane. The inner membrane looked dark brown and the vessels were shriveled and mostly brown, so I felt it was safe to proceed. The membrane didn't feel tough/leathery, so I don't think the membrane was holding him back. I think it was space. I exposed about a third of baby, and set him back for the last time. Minutes later he gave a final shove and was out. There was poop in his shell, so I think he was definitely ready to be out! I shouldn't say "he"; my 5-year-old has named baby "Rose Chocolate Familia Mountain, Rose for short".

2nd egg is beginning to wiggle again. I am not surprised it's 3 days behind the other - on candling it looked well behind the other.

we ALL do what we feel we need to do and what we can live with! no judgment!

but that also explains it's little lazy start...assisted babies are a little slower to their feet...
enjoy that baby

well so far....3 days early....4 guineas
2 days early 1 cream legbar, 1 frizzle silkie and 1 silkie
several more eggs chirping

a first for me....1 of the guineas little yolks won't absorb...usually if they hatch with a little out I isolate them until it absorbs in a few hours but this one has been with a pea size yolk sticking out for about 12 hours...I've applied antibiotic ointment and have it isolated sitting on a moist paper towel.....I hope it makes it!!! it wants so bad to go with the others but not until something changes with that little bit of yolk!

Yeah congrats sounds like a good hatch so far! Praying for your little Guinea!!

I just scored a barely used Hovabator Genesis that I will pick up on Thursday! Tomorrow I pick up my Bielefelder eggs that were shipped from south Texas to North Texas - so hopefully they will fare better than my previous shipped eggs. My mixed batch of local rare breed eggs goes into lockdown on Friday. Eggciting times!

Yeah awesome!! Good luck with the new bator! That's a nice one I just got the Hovabator 1583 and I have my 1st hatch in it now and so far I love it! Holds temp and humidity really well and love the bigger window so much easier for the kids to watch Hopefull we get some to hatch this time my very first hatch (I'm only on my second lol) I used an lg still air and it was horrible with temps and we got 0-30 I started with 48 this time and I weeded 3 out 1 bloodring, 1 quitter (very early) & 1 clear. but the rest from what I can tell are doing good will candle again on Friday to see if anymore can be removed and again before lockdown. I'm just excited because I see a lot of veining and I've even seen some baby peeps floating around in there absolutely amazing!! God bless and good luck with you upcoming hatches!!

Sounds like you did great, congratulations!

OMG! I am so relieved and happy! My Bielefelder eggs arrived and I went to pick them up this morning. They were shipped from South to North Texas and look GREAT! And even though I bought only 6 he sent 10! These normally sell for $180 a dozen - I paid $29.99 :D I am one happy girl! All the air cells are still attached, no cracks, giant beautiful light/medium brown eggs. If you are looking for some of these I can't recommend him enough http://www.rarebreedauctions.com/au...elder-chicken-hatching-eggs&auction_id=115400 Even though I probably could just set them I am going to let them sit for a day since I will have my new Hovabator to put them in tomorrow!!!
