September Hatch-A-Long!

Ok I know this may sound like an odd question but I have my incubator down at my mom's (I work there fulltime during the week) and next week we are closed for vacation and she will not be home to you think it will hurt if I unplug the bator and turner and take it home for the week its about a 25 min drive if not I would have to drive down every day to check it :0( If you think its alright what would be the best way of going about this?
Maybe you could try using a power inverter. You hook it up to the battery and it inverts the power in your vehicle to 120 volts. You can get one of these from any truck stop or even Wal Mart for that matter. Find out how many watts you need to run the bater in you vehicle before getting one too small.

So sad. I lost a chick. It was almost halfway zipped and was doing great but it just couldn't get through the membrane. If i had noticed that earlier i would have help it. First time i ever lost a chick. and its even worse bc it was fully developed and ready to come out. I'm kicking myself right now.

If it helps at all I lost a lovey RIR hen today because I misdiagnosed her problem.
Thought she had hurt herself because she was walking funny.....she was egg bound and by the time I figured it out.
I couldn't help her................
Guess we are not perfect...............
Hope the rest of your hatch is great...........

I candled a a couple eggs today. I couldnt see an aircell and its day 5. Ive been reading for 2 hours on candling. I did see one with a moving dark spot and one with veins. These are brown eggs and i know the pic quality isnt great.. I think 1st egg pic is clear?? I def see a dark spot in the second egg and veins in the third. What abt the air cell?? Im so confused and appreciate any advice. I will wait until day 8 to candle all 12

No we are not perfect and everything is a trial and error process. We learn from our mistakes and brush our selves off and are all the stronger and wiser for it. I'm sorry for your loss and it sucks when you lose one though.

Thanks. I have 13 and hopefully more on the way. So sorry to hear about your RIR. It's always so heartbreaking losing them. :(

To see the air cell you would hold the flashlight above the egg and pointing down into the fat end of the egg. See if that helps - dark eggs can be really hard to see anything - blue ones too!

All 9 of my babies hatched or had help to hatch - and are now in the brooder hiding under the stuffed puppy and snuggling each other. I think my fave one is actually the Olive egger (Lavender Ameraucana Roo over a Blue Marans) that came out bright yellow with fuzzy feathered feet and legs and more fluff than any other chick, and pretty sure what will be muffs and a beard, LOL! Hope its a girl and can't wait to see what she lays :D

yesterday i candled again and one egg that had a baby that was quite vigorous in it moving when i candled it before was no longer moving and another had a blood ring so i think they both perished. very sad...i know that since they are shipped eggs this can happen but i just want every baby possible to hatch and it look as i've lost 2 and hatch day is 7 days away for 22 of the eggs which includes these two that most likely dead and then the other 16 should hatch two days later on the 15th....have not tossed the two yet as the one could just decided not to move when i candled..i've had chicks do that before when i candled them and they hatched out just fine. and i know the one that seem to have a blood ring is more then likely dead but i'll leave it till lockdown unless it starts to stink or something of the like.

What is funny is that the other one out of the same Momma looks like one of my barred rocks.

And I just had a stroke of goodish luck. I bought an extra auto turner yesterday in prep for building another bator. The autoturner I have about 35 rare breed eggs in right now all of the sudden started vibrating badly. I was able to whip it out, transfer all the eggs to the new one and go on without a hitch. Good thing I happened to be awake. Pretty sure that level of vibration would kill the eggs. Hopefully I got it worked out fast enough.
