September Hatch-A-Long!

How do y'all figure hatch rats? I set 12 eggs and at day 7 four are clear or not fertile. Do you count the number eggs at lockdown? and then the number live chicks?

Wow! I had 6 eggs. 3 have hatched, 1 last night and 2 this morning, and the other 3 have officially pipped, 1 of which looks about ready to start zipping its way out! So glad this all happened on the weekend when my girls r here!!

My two lonely turkey eggs are wiggling! Does that mean they are nearly ready to hatch? Supposedly, they have 4 days to go.

how exciting...if they are shipped they could have started in transit....I'm excited to hear how it goes! pictures as soon as you can...mine aren't due until the 19th

I think some count every egg that goes in but I don't know how you can count the clears if the girls with hold lol

well the baby with the deformed leg is going down hill....it's little back is very hard right where it's legs are...I was telling my husband it's probably deformed inside too...plus my dog snipped at it ....it's a tiny dog but she got it enough to make it bleed!! I've got it wrapped up in a wash cloth in my bra! I'll keep it with me until it's over...if I were a better chick person I'd stop it's pain!

Are you giving it electrolytes? Maybe it should be under the heat lamp in it's own little section where the other chicks can't get to him. If he's getting VERY bad, I would cull him. I wasn't fond of the idea of culling until I saw someone write: It isn't about you, it's about the animal's well being. Not putting it out of it's misery for the sake of your own feelings is selfish.

It really opened my eyes.

I agree with this, I was home alone the first time I had to cull a chick and I cried like a baby :'( Sometimes its a necessary evil when we "farm" we have to be ready for the death too :( I can't say it gets much easier as I've had to do it more

I really don't think it could ever walk...

yes I tried to give it some but it's pretty new and wouldn't really take any...it hardly opens it's eyes and sleeps a lot...

I've had babies die for no apparent reason, I've had them hatch then wane and die...I've never had one hatch deformed!
