Happy with my 4 little fluffy babies tho.

One seems to be struggling on his legs tho - is it called splayed legs?

Poor little fella keeps falling on his back and just sleeps loads

Still nothing. I'm actually getting a little frustrated. I've put so much time and money into this and actually have had to do SOOOO many chores and work to be able to hatch these eggs (my parents only allowed me if I did chores and junk) and now they're not hatching :he .

I am so devastated :hit My biggest, healthiest, most beautiful Ameraucana/White Leghorn cross that hatched perfect with no help and was cheeping and playing an hour ago laid down and died when I left to take a nap with my 2 year old. She was almost twice the size of the others and had the puffiest cheeks and beard already. No bloody poop, no sign of injury, nothing. No clue and now I am afraid for the others. The only thing I can come up with is that earlier today they discovered there were pine shavings (the largest kind) under the paper towels and were digging them up and pecking away. I put down new paper towels and blocked their access to those corners - but maybe I was too late and she had eaten some giant piece and it killed her???? I checked her mouth to see if she appeared to have choked and saw nothing. No pasty butt, no bloody poop anywhere in the brooder, no sign that I could find of a broken neck or any kind of trauma. And she was so big there is no way someone else bullied her. Maybe a heart attack?? Here is my sweet baby :( She was the one with the giant curls by her cheeks. This is her when she was born.

So sorry familypendragon. :hugs There seems to be a window of time within their first couple weeks of life when it's common for chicks to drop dead. And I swear it always seems to happen to the favorites. :(

Hello all! Haven't been on here in a while and thought I'd share some news with y'all. First off, since I began my chicken journey Ive had some hard learned lessons. I started my flock last year with 6 birds onlly one of which is still with me today thanks to my dogs. I later picked up a trio of barred rocks but one of those ladies ended up in the pot being she was way too mean and pecked a lavender orp roo to death. So I was down to 3 girls..2 barred rocks and a white EE. This past spring I picked up another 6 babies, 2 RIR's a white leghorn, an unknown, and a dominique. Of course, my dog couldnt resist and took out three of them in one bite. Lesson...never let dog near chickens. Dog passed away of old age. Not a problem anymore. So now I am left with the 2 barred rocks, 1 RIR roo, 1 unknown roo, my EE and the dominique all happily free ranging about my property. Well earlier this month I neglected to collect the eggs for a couple days and noticed that one of my barred rocks went broody. I decided to let her do her thing and today I made my checks and was pleasantly surprised to find a cute little black sex link peeping away. I have 4 other eggs setting so hopefully I will greet them tomorrow or the next day. Can't wait and am very excited as this is my first hatching experience.
