Serama pipped on wrong side - UPDATE - 3 of 6 and hatch is over :(

Totally true. Hopefully catching this little guy in time did the trick. He is zipping now, albeit slowly.

Since you changed the angle of the egg, that's perfectly normal for him to begin again in a different spot. You sent a message - not there you idiot, and were heard. That's actually a good sign... keep an eye on him. Good luck Wrongway!

So, it has been almost 24 hours since the first pip, but only about 8 hours since the second. It seems to have slowed down in its efforts to escape the wretched womb - what do I do, if anything?

Hi Cherlyn, I had to help my second serama baby out of it's shell, it couldn't do it on it's own. The first one popped right out like nobody's business. The second born was the first egg to pip, and 12 hours later she seemed to be losing strength. Her membrane was very thick, and she was very tiny. I just picked off the shell where the aircell was, but left the membrane intact. About 20 min later she worked her way out of the membrane. If you try this, make sure to keep the membrane dampened (not where her beak is, you could drown her). Read the how to help sticky on here for how to do it. Make sure she really needs the help though, otherwise you could do more damage than good. Also read the when to help or not sticky. Good luck, and please keep us updated.

Did he miss the air sac with his first pip? If he did then it would be normal for him to take up to 48hours to hatch. Normally they pip into the air sac and sit for about 24hours breathing and absorbing the yolk before we even see anything except maybe rocking eggs and the occasional peep. Then they pip and they can take another 24hours from there to finish. When they pip in weird places they skip that first step and go straight through the shell so they are actually pipping up to 24hours before they normally would have and will take extra time. Not usually a full 48hours but all my weird pips that missed the air sac took at least 24hours and sometimes 36hours.

I didn't see if you have other eggs hatching? If there are others still hatching I would definitely leave him for now. I wait until there is no further progress on any egg for 24hours after one has at least zipped. So if a chick hatches, 24hours go by, another widens it's pip mark or a new one pips, and the 24hours reset. If a chick hatches and 24hours go by and no one does anything then I start trying to figure out why. I've never had a chicken hatch more than 24hours after the others have finished. If they don't hatch within that time there is always something wrong with mine and they never hatch without intervention. I don't mean 24hours from pip cause like I said I've had some pip weird and a day before the others. I don't start the count until someone does more than pip.

If you've never helped a chick before there are high odds you'll kill your first one. Even when you know what your doing you have about the same risk of it dying if you help or if you leave it which is one reason some never choose to help.

Wish I knew a bit more about this stuff. As it stands now, I am shocked he is still alive. Looks like he hit a blood vessel with his first pip - I peeled back a very tiny piece of shell - leaving the membrane exactly as I found it - and saw that under the membrane was a good amount of blood. As soon as I saw the blood, I wrapped the egg in a warm moist towel and put it back in the 'bator.

No idea what happens from here on out.

To be honest, I do not know exactly how to tell if he missed the air sac. I have successfully helped chicks hatch before, but this is the first time that I tried to help one that (apparently) pipped into a blood vessel.

Going to bed in a bit - we will see in the morning how this turns out.
