Seriously? The ER? For that?

The thing that got me with the family of six is that they have insurance! I saw them hand their cards to the reception nurse and they have the same kind of insurance I do. If they have the same coverage, it means a $100 co-pay for each person being seen. I can't imagine spending that much to be told that I have a cold.

I have taken my son to the ER for haveing a cold for a couple of days but thats because when he was a baby he wouldnt take a bottle when he was sick and after 48 with about a total of 4 ounces of formula he would get kinda whimpy and most the time end up needing 24-48 hours of IV fluids and O2 for whatever reason .

it's that time of year for asthmatics. Inhaled steroids are great (reduce exacerbations and need for rescue inhaler!) I just got done teaching an asthma education class tonoc (triggers and signs) thurs--meds and peak flow! It's amazing how many FP docs don't have asthmatics on the right combo of meds.

I work in the ED at a hospital here. It is the same story everywhere. We have a walk-in-care clinic in the same building as the hospital family practice, and patients of that same docs office, will come to us first instead of having to wait. They have a provider in their office just for walk-in urgent visits everyday- but they would rather come to us.

There is so much abuse of the system.

On the upside, I am getting some great material for a comedy act...

Not to play devils advocate here but like me you never know why they have there kids there for a cold unless you ask them or sit and listen to there whole visit. maybe the have kids that are immune compramised ect Ill show you one reason my son got to the ER rather frenquently for what started out as a simple cold ect.

So while I can feel youre frustration in people doing things that take time from important things , you can never be shure that its as fickle as you think it is or as pointless
