Set eggs 4/6, EDD 4/27 & 4/28...wanna hatch with me??

I used a fine line Sharpie last hatch to number my eggs because I didn't have a pencil to hand. But I only wrote on the shell above the air sac - I figured even if it penetrated it wouldn't come into contact with anything much.

Ok I give up! (on my day 24 eggs in the 'bator)
I'm gonna be setting 10 silkie eggs tomorrow in the a.m.
wee.gif
Yesterday my splash silkie sat and sat on the nest all day then last night at dusk she went to the roost, she did lay an egg but come on it took her THAT long to lay that egg. I checked for an egg everytime I went out there so I know she wasn't just sitting on it. I thought for sure she was going to be broody

guess the eggs go in the 'bator.

as for the sharpie, why? the pencil doesn't wipe off (for some curious reason) and it doesn't smell.

but yes I couldn't find a pencil once and was tempted to use a sharpie. Now I put one on the fridge marked "MOMS, U TOUCH U DIE!"

good luck everyone and I want a frizzle!

don't tell my DH but I was on CL (craigslist) looking at fertile eggs for sale in my area to go in the 'bator with my silkies.

None sounded like the right kind. I did find some women who said she has chicks that will be 1 week this Sat. (which r the same age as mine) and she WON'T sell them before then! ??? They were "black chicks" ??? got me, I was confused. Any ways happy 'bating

I use the sharpie b/c it's easier to see, especially on dark eggs. Plus if you put eggs with pencil under a broody you won't be able to see the pencil in a couple days. I have to mark mine well b/c my broody's stay with the flock until hatching time and everyone lays under them, so I have to be able to dig out the new eggs.

Well I could see how you wouldnt be able to see pencil on dark brown eggs, or under a broody. Both of which I have not!

I just mark mine in the bator with pencil. I have some light brown eggs and can see it on them.

Good idea marking above the air sac...I wouldnt have thought of that.

Amy, I already gave up on my last 3 eggs...mostly because I had a full bator going in.

I will join if you guys dont mind. I set 2 dozen eggs on 4/6. They consist of 12 French Black Copper Marans, 6 Blue Copper Marans, and 6 Games.

hi if i may join too i'm very new to this but want to learn this is my first hatch ive got embden geese due on the 4/17 and then i have a mixture of 1 leghorn, 1 wyandotte, sadly the gold laced wyandotte egg got damaged, 2 silkies, 2 frizzles, 2 sizzles and 2 unknown eggs due between 4/27 to 4/29 but as this is my first hatch ive been told not to get my hopes too high but ive had a great little team behind me all the way and a very knowledgeable friend a phone call away and her 10 year old son who makes me feel like a hatchling compared to him

my friend marked my eggs up in a none toxic childs bingo marker as its a light colour and she has always used it for her eggs diffrent colour for each breed ect she say's she has never had a problem

Oh, count me in! I set a dozen Buttercup and Spangled Hamburg eggs yesterday in the incubator, plus now I have THREE (it was four broody hens, but one girl lost interest) broody hens in the coop. I have no idea what they're laying on. Let's just say right now I'm having "coop management issues". None of my hens are laying where they should all of a sudden, and the coop is a mess right now. Since I have off tomorrow I will once again try to fence off where the broody hens are right now. And I have no idea what day any of the eggs are on?! It'll be a surprise, that's for sure! Plus this is the first time I've had broody hens. They are so darn cute though.

So... This'll be a fun thread! I am still learning how to incubate. I am on my 6th or 7th hatch, but I've never had the best of luck. It seems like this year I'm getting better. I was using a LG still air and manually turning, but didn't have good luck. Then I moved on to the Hovabator with the fan, but still manually hand turned the eggs with better results. Then last night DH took me up to TSC and made me buy a LG electric turner. I am impressed with the turner and it fits really nice into the Hovabator! So, I am very very excited with this batch of eggs! Yay!

I did same day, due to hatch on the 27th... have 31... Here's a pic...

Ameraucanas (sorry if I spelled it wrong, it's been a long day)
and the rest are mixed breed (roo is an ameraucana and hens are blue cochin and barred rocks)

I also have a broody silkie sitting on some mixed silkie eggs but they are due to hatch the 21st.

Can't wait, this is our first time...

ChickyLaura- I have the LG turner in my hobabator too. Love it!! Though wasnt able to use it much last few hatches as I had staggered hatches and was doing hatching and bating in same bator.
From my own experience, your not so good hatching luck was because you were using a still air LG! My 1st 2 hatches were in that. I started with 13, 4 made to lockdown, 0 hatched.
Then I had 13 cochins, 9 made to lockdown, 1 hatched and he has a bum leg. I stopped using it and started doing everything in my hovabator that I got awhile into my hatchings. Love the thing, and its old, used and beat up looking! But it came with the turner and fan, couldnt pass it up. (And the guy that I bought it from keeps giving me free eggs to hatch!)
Im eyeing the brinsea eco 20 or the hovabator genisis 1588.

I agree, I think it was the LG. I (for some unknown reason) was determined to get my LG to "work". So last hatch I realized that I can't get the LG to work, no matter what I do. I tried to hatch out cochins last year but they didn't make it. I actually bought several batches of eggs online that didn't make it. It's ashame, but I learned my lesson. I'm already having much better luck with the Hovabator, since my last batch 3 hatched out, and I lost one due to my stupidity - humidity dropped when I was at work.

I too am eyeing the Brinsea!

But I want to see what I can do with my Hovabator before I go spending any more money.
