Hi BLaBauve,

It's funny, I never thought I would be into silkies - most of my current flock are non silkies - 9 barnyard mixes and now 11 LF pullet chicks in the brooder (wyandottes, probably RIR's and some Rocks - my neighbor and I split a "Large Fowl Assortment"). When I first got our original 10 chicks from a lady who was hatching her mixed breed eggs, one of the eggs turned out to be a silkie mix who looks very much like a silkie but has regular feathers - that is Liberace. All our chickens got lots of TLC as chicks so they are all pretty friendly but Liberace is the only one who allows everyone to pet him and he is nice to the pullets. My niece and nephews are city folk and don't have any pets - they LOVE Liberace, so I promised I would get them their own little Liberaces to stay here at my farm. So that's the long story of why I got silkies.

I am hoping to breed more Liberaces - really like the regular feathering but also the fancy look!

Here's a pic of Liberace:

Thanks for asking!

Wow, Liberace is so handsome!

I am setting 5 eggs under my Silkie hen Aniera, started at 7pm Aug 25.
They are from the farmer's market, dark brown eggs. I asked what breed of chicken they were from and was told "Light Brahma crossed with Red Rock". So I have no idea what I will get other than good egg layers and some decent meat roos. I would like to figure out what colours I might be getting if they hatch. They were washed, but I thought I'd try anyways.

I love how big your bator is! My poor chicks are going to be squished in mine! Oh, and your Silkie is handsome, for a silkie.

its hard enough to wait 18-22 day to meet the little feather babies i cant Imagen 9 mouths with a little person inside you not being able to see them for so long!

I double checked my records this morning and my cochin eggs should have hatched on the 24th. I gave them one last candling, saw nothing moving so I broke all four open. Each was fertile, but looked as if they all died around the same time. They were tiny so it must have been in the very first days. I feel bad that I may have "killed" 10 little fuzzy butts! I still don't know if the 4 I set on the 24th are even fertile! I'll keep trying though!

Awww, akuma, that sucks about your babies dying in shell.. But don't blame yourself. Maybe they were not meant to hatch and this batch will be big and healthy.

Thanks! The bator is a styrofoam cooler that I got from work - I work at a science center and we get shipments of live fish for the aquariums in those nice big coolers. I'm waiting on another cooler to make my hatcher, since I'll be setting some mille fleur d'uccle eggs in the bator next week!

yes, the addiction is fully underway!
