Set Jan 29, Hatch Feb 19/20 Join Me!

Even I am biting my nails and I'm not trying to hatch anything. This has been a fun thread. I started a culture of meal worms just so I don't feel completely left out. Okay that was supposed to be funny, but I really did start meal worms in preparation of getting Jungle Fowl later this year. I did get to searching around about eggs, chicks and hatching yesterday and foudn some really interesting stuff on just what is going on. what cause the chick to pip and zip. And why it is so important to not open the bator once you are in lock down. In a nut shell you want the Carbon Monoxide levels to rise. It was actually quite a bit of information but in all it is the carbon monoxide that causes muscle spasms in the chick. these spasms do three things. they effect the neck causing the pecking that creates the pip and zip. it draws the remaining yolk sac into the chick, and it strengthens the chicks legs. Thought this might be a good tiime to say all this since I am pretty sure everyone is resisting that quick I'll just check opening of the bator. it is not the temperature dropping or humidity dropping that is really the problem. you let all the carbon monoxide out and the muscle spasms stop. I guess you could try breathing into the vent holes for a while though, Nah forget I said that.

I am not sure... But I think I may have a pip. Its been there all day and I thought it was just a speck of poo but it appears to distort the shell surface a little now. OMG I have been staring at these eggs too long. I think I might be inhaling some of their carbon monoxide. Time for me to get some fresh air and take a break from these eggs!

I think you may have gotten these two mixed up.

Carbon monoxide is exhaust from combustion of fuels.
Carbon Dioxide is given off during respiration.

nuts4..lol! take a 'breather'.

No discernible movement for me yet. I will be relieved to see any kind of movement at this point.

Penturner, Very interstin' about the carbon dioxide levels. I had no idea.
Did any of your meal worms hatch yet?

Nuts, I feel like you...staring at nothing happening. I was thinking that staring at eggs in the incubator is about as productive as staring at eggs in the fridge. The only difference is you have three weeks of anxiety invested in the bator eggs as well as hopes and dreams. When was the last tine you got anxious about the eggs in the fridge? I guess I'll go to bed and hope for better in the morning.

I have ONE pip for real!

I really dont even know what day I am on. I set Friday Jan 29 at 9 am. If I count Friday as day 1, I am on day 21. If I dont, I am on day 20. It is going to be a long day.

Well, out of the 4 eggs that are on day 22, three have pips. My original pip hasn't changed much but I can still see the chick moving through the hole. I have another one that pipped last night. It's an egg my husband said to throw away right before lockdown because he didn't think there was anything happening. I refused and I think it will hatch! I had another pip when I woke up this morning. The other original one doesn't seem to be doing anything yet. I have 8 more eggs on day 20 today.

Maybe we'll have some hatches today! My 9-year old son told me before he left for school that he's 99.9% sure we'll have a hatch today, so I'm going with that!
