Set my *FIRST* batch of eggs this AM Jan.21st. UPDATE. I've got 2.pg14

I use a LED Penlight with a small cardboard box with a small hole in it.
put penlight up through box, small end of egg over hole, turn on penlight in dark room......interior of egg lit.

some use a slide projector to see through dsrk eggs.....
Some use a mini maglite
some buy the candlers on the market.

Depends on what you want to do.

Day 3 and all is well KNOCK on wood!! So far temp and humidity holding perfectly. Course, My bater did that the first time too, until it started spiking temps and getting lows about half way thru. My new King Suro 20 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so once I have it up and running up to speed I will transfer my setting over to it.

Bailys, hmmmm. Don't have any. Wonder if JD Gentleman Jim would work? I had about given up on my hatch when noticed about 6:30 that I have a pip N a zip. Trouble is, very little progress is being made and my nails are about down to the first knuckle!! The zip is a silkie [I've never had one] the pip is a dk brwn leghorn -- all are bantams.

Bye th' bye, I made a candler with a flashlight and 2 TO rolls but could only see into white and cream eggs. I picked up a 20 LED flashlight for $6.99 at Bill's discount Hardware and love it. Just hold it in my left hand - horizontally, with my thumb and forefinger making a cushion, hold the egg against the cushion and can see into even my darkest eggs. Brilliant cool light,

Gonna be a LOOONNNNG 3 weeks!

Today is day 6 for most of my eggs. Last Friday I went hunting in an area of the State that I don't frequent very much any more and I came across a model 7200 fan kit for my LG 9200 at a very good price, so I bought it. Today my local Agway has two on their shelf. (I swear they weren't there last week) Price is a little higher, but still less expensive than TSC. I won't install the fan kit on this hatch of course.

I may have to buy another 9200 from TSC @ $41.99 and 7200 locally for a hatcher. I know, I have a 1200 series GQF Incubator and 2 - 1200 series Hatchers in my basement, but no way to use them right now. It would be nice to have a way to start more eggs soon so I can have some summer layers when I have my full flocks gathered. I'm sure I'll need to cull some roosters from whatever hatches.

I finally have temperature and humidity at decent levels and holding close.

I hope everything looks good when I candle on Wednesday.

Good Luck everyone.

You have me a little confused, here...LOL which isn't to hard at this point..

you're at DAY 3, right? And you have a pip N zip...and it's a silkie....? Did you dirnk your Gentlemen Jim...lol
Or do you have 2 bators going?
But at the end of yout post, you're talking about a LONG 3 weeks...
If you have a baby silkie, can we see pics? Just a little encouragement for my lil eggies....

today temps are at 99.2 and humidity 40%, we lost electric yesterday, but I don't think for very long. DH came home for lunch at 11:00 and it was on. I came home at 1:00 and the clocks were flashing and my temps were at 99.4, so i think everything is ok...
got that candle-r thing....yup that's all it is, a piece of wood with a little hole in it....not even painted or anything. i was expecting something more fancy...LOL
I'll be candleing on Thursday, Just giving it that extra day. happy thoughts...

anyone have candleing results?

I know I'm bad and that I should keep my hands off, but I can't help myself. I candled (3x's now but for less than 30 sec. total each time, when I was turning them, and not all of them) and saw very faint veins
celebrate.gif
I'm keeping my hands off now till day 8....it's going to be tough but now that I've seen a few veins I can relax a bit. I think to tide myself over till then, I may go out tonight and bug mama and check on her egg, she only has 5-6 days left. I want to make sure it's still there at least, maybe candle it too if she's not too mad at me.

Good to hear you got a candler...I just "borrowed" my DH $100 LED work flashlight. It works great!!! Plus, at the price he paid I can't justify going and buying a candler when I have that to "borrow".

As for the Bailey's, they have a mint flavored one too....excellent in coffee
thumbsup.gif
Not sure about JD...never been a fan, I'd have to ask DH about that one

Anyone else with updates?

I'm in. I have eggs in the bator and a broody all due at the same time. Serama's, silkia/polish crosses, silkie cochin's, silkies a a bunch of mixed ones from my flock. I've candled some and out of 8 serama's I think I have 4 or 5 w/ veins.
wee.gif
:weee:weee I'm not candling again till saturday and then I'll have to decided if some need to be tossed. humidity and temp holding steady.

I have the one silky that finally hatched around 4;30 this am, and another trying but getting nowhere -- think I'll help her. The temp spike to 108 today didn't help. There is something wrong with the hatched one's feet. I was punchy when I wrote the post and am worse now. Was in Lockdown for my January hatch last night, but also have a second bator going with the clutch I set the afternoon I went into lockdown, Story and pics at

ETA: My hatch due Feb 12 is 17 Bantam Welsummers. Also, new bator came today, will be moving those eggs into it.

Day is only day 5 and I candled and seen nothing. I know it is too early but I can always hope. LOL I am not even sure these eggs are fertile, they came from my blue orps and they are only six months old. For some reason I was thinking they were older. The roo is sure busy but he was in there with a lot of hens so I am not even sure if these eggs were fertilizer. They blues are seperated from the rest of the flock now and so if not I will try again in a month or so.

cute pic... oh no on the spike, hope it didn't do any harm....Lol ..now understanding your post! happy hatching vibes...and you got Banty Welsummers, did you get them off the crazy train egg auction? I was watching those. I got the LF welsummers off of that post...It's going to be hard to candled those babies...

momma's chickenskeeping my fingers crossed for ya on the fertility of your eggs...blue orps sound great..

so, temps 99.4, are still good here and humidity is is 40% I'm turning about 4-5 times a day, more if i can, less if I can't but at least 3 times. Do you think that will make a difference? Not doing it the same everyday? jeez, sure hope not!

I candled my eggs just minutes ago, that have been in the incubator for 7 days, and I'm a little confused as to what I was looking at. I saw veins and dark masses in most of the eggs, but they didn't look like the illustrations in Raising Chickens for Dummies. I saw little masses moving in some eggs but not in others. The one OEGB looked clear, no veins and no dark mass. We didn't know if it was a fertile egg or not, so I guess the hen it it came from had been separated from the rooster a couple weeks before my friend got it. I'm going to leave it in for a couple more days although it's probably headed for the basket.

That means that 11 eggs have a chance at becoming 6 Silkies and 5 Bantam Cochins.
