Setting and hatching in December? Come join us! - Holiday Season hatch-along

I had the same problem once with day old chicks. Took 4 days to get to NY from Ohio! Then, on the 4th day they wanted me to travel almost 2 hours to their facility to pick up the chicks. I called my Postmaster and told her I paid good money for those chicks and it was their responsibility to get them here. They sent the mail carrier to get them!! I lost more than 6 out of 25.
There is a good reason why they don't insure....it's because nobody at the USPS wants to be responsible and do their jobs!! They get paid very well (my ex works for the USPS) and they don't like being made to be responsible to make sure deliveries get to where they need to go in a safe, timely fashion. If you mail a letter, they are not responsible if it doesn't get there. It's too bad that nobody is there to hold these people accountable and to make sure things are done properly. Oops, we are talking about a government run agency, aren't
Weavers you are right...They dont want to be responsible
You should Travel 2 hours?? CRAZY!!!

Marine was looking at those reptile humidifier...is yours still doing ok? I read some reviews and they seem to say they work a while then stop ...both brands i saw on Amazon
How is yours and what brand if its still doing well. What does it get your humidity to. ? VEry high? That wasnt on the webitie either. Can you ajust it higher or lower ?
Mines a zoo med repti-fogger. I have a digital controller controlling it tho. It gives me a range of 15-95%. Many of the problems are from build up on the ultra sonic parts. If you use demineralized or distilled water it isnt an issue (tho clr brand cleaner can fix the issue). The controller is called a hygro-therm i believe.

Is the controller sold where the fogger is and do you hook it up.?Are there directions? Hope so!I am not good figurering things out unless i have a picture diagram.

My incubator is stuffed full, and I am approaching lockdown next week. I have about 5 types of
chicks in there, and I really want to keep them separated so I know who is who when they
hatch, but I'm not sure how to do it, because there are so many they will probably be allover
the place inside the incubator unless i grab them out right away.... how do you guys
handle this problem?

it's really exciting i have black copper marans, wheatan marans, black tail buff marans
and some blue marans, then there are some white leghorn pullet /ee roo cross from MDippy
to make super blue egg layers..

hope they make it they were really expensive and I drove 120 miles to pick them up
instead of shipping, but the marans are going to be my foundation stock
so I got the best ones i could.

Seems like all of those breeds would look different when they hatch so I wouldn't think you would need to mark them. But this is what I use to identify chicks.

Good luck with your hatch!

Thanks those look good, i havent seen that type before, i guess they stretch to put them on?

I had a chick that i thought was a dominique, and even when she grew up I thought so, and then this really
dark brown egg showed up... LOL!!! she was actually a cuckoo marans.. I'm not that experienced so i may be
able to tell, I just don't know yet.

When do you band them right after they come out of the incubator? I was thinking of putting little cardboard partitions in there between the groups?

do you prefer putting the eggs into cartons to hatch? the first time i didn't and the chicks rolled the eggs allover the place. Also they were pecking
each other so i had to remove them fairly quickly.

Yes you just stretch them over their foot. I tried the spiral leg bands and they are hard to get on and off. I band them when I move them from the hatcher to the brooder.
I was leaving them in cartons to hatch but am trying some that are hatching today laying down. I had a bad hatch rate once in the past laying them down but I don't think it was the main problem.
I think rolling around and pecking is normal. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to help the others hatch or clean up.
