Setting Eggs 1/19 - Hatching Buddies

Congratulations everyone!!! Just when I was starting to give up hope, I FINALLY had an external pip around 10 this morning. (S)he just expanded the hole a few munites ago, but no lateral "unzipping" yet. The little beak is poking in and out, and cheeping away. Should I be worried about it being "stuck" and unable to turn? I sure admire you veteran hatchers - this is emotional, nerve wracking stuff!! Today is day 23 for this little one.... Prayers appreciated.....

I would say given them time I intervened when two of mine made no progress more than 12 hours after pip.. Some of them seemed to external pip then within a few hours they had zipped.. The smallest chick I helped out last night I was afraid he was not going to make it actually had to fluff him up myself as he was still wet and pitiful looking. Happy to saw although he's have the size of the other chicks he's pretty feisty..

Thank you for the advice. It is greatly appreciated!! I'll keep my hands glued down a while longer. If he hasn't made more progress in the next few hours, it may be a sleepless night! If I end up helping him, I am tempted to candle quick for internal pips on the others. This little guy is a Welly, but with shipped Marans eggs making up over half of the eggs in lockdown, I'm worried about those thick shells. The ones I eggtopsied on day 14 were very thick shelled with tough membranes. Thanks again, and congratulations on you little fluffers!!

Yup those Maran eggs are thick the two I had to help were the Marans but the eggs were very narrow and they were squished.. Poor things were like contortionists.. :) I'm surprised my largest egg didn't have a monster chick in it.. it was almost twice the size of the others guess he had some breathing room as he's the same size as the other chicks.. LOL

I heard back from the lady I got the eggs from they are more in likely Orphington X's as the one coop had an Orphington roo and some barred rocks, comets, and an orphington hen.. As they don't have feathered legs she thinks they are a cross of the two.. So two what appear to be pure bred Marans, one possible pure bred orphington, and some x's.. not a bad deal for $10 worth of eggs.. :)

Thanks! Day 23 for the Wellies. Can't believe I sat on my hands for that long :). This little guy is not resting, he is chirping back to your chicks, and playing football with the rest of the eggs. If nobody else has an external pip by morning, I'm going to risk candling to see if any others are still alive or what's going on. What do you think? Good plan, or should I leave them alone? I'm so thrilled just to have somebody hatch!!!
