I had a speckled sussex hen go broody, so I decided to give her the eggs I had in the incubator that I set on March 9th. Since they are eggs from my own flock, it won't be terrible if they don't hatch...but I sure hope they do. If they do, they'll have a momma hen to keep them warm and to show them the ropes! This is my first time hatching with a broody hen, so we'll see!
I went out of town for a couple of days and returned to find my broody hen had died. She didn't eat or drink much at all while she was on the nest...so I am guessing that she died from starvation or dehydration. I hate it that this happened. When I got back the eggs were cold, so I put them in the incubator but I don't have much hope.
I learn with each failure...though I am not sure I could have prevented this.
