setting eggs 5/10.

candled at day 3 and all 30 eggs are good. some of those we got from the broody are almost dark and moving quite a bit. we might have under estimated how long she had been setting on those eggs.

some are obviously 3 day eggs those we that were on day 4 or 5 (now should be day 7 or 8) might accually be as far along as day 12 or 13. any idea on how to work this? temp stays around 99 to 100 and humidity stays around 45 to 52. i don't want the oldest to shrink wrap and i don't want to drown the younger ones.

Akashia: Wish I knew the answer, ask 10 people and you'll probably get 10 different answers when it comes to humidity. I'm always hearing positive things about a 'dry hatch' which is why I'm trying that. We live in a pretty humid area, so a dry hatch for me is running no less than 32 so far. It's been raining cats n dogs for 3 days here too. I think your temps are good. Mine is staying at 100. drops a bit every time I open to turn the eggs though.

My Broody was off her eggs today, looking like death. Her comb is so light I can't hardly stand it. She left the coop and was scratching around and what do you think happened?? That Randy BCM Cockeral was chasing her around! I swear, if I didn't need babies outta him, he'd be soup TONIGHT! I finally had to scoop her up and lock her back in the run so he'd leave her alone. One of her hatchmates was sitting on the eggs while she got herself a snack, how cool is that?? I'm going to scramble her up an egg, see if we can't get some color back in that comb.

I don't mind turning the eggs, we were trying to hatch an EMU egg not long ago and needed to turn that 6 times a day, so this is nothing. It does worry my having the temp drop every time I open the bator. I'm not going to candle until day 10, and unless something smells funny, they'll all go into lockdown.

i wouldn't worry too much. as long as the temp doesn't get into the low 70's. the hen will get up about once a day usually for about 30 min. short periods won't hurt the eggs.

Akashia, I did a staggered hatch @ my 1st attempt. I had 3 eggs make it to lockdown out of batch 1 and 5 days later had another 9 make it to lockdown.
I only upped the humidity to 55% originally to help stop 2nd batch drowning but only got 1/3 hatch (they shrinkwrapped and I only got 1 survivor with help) on the last 2 days I upped the humidity to 65-70%. The 2nd batch were on 45% humidity for 24 hours before lockdown which I upped to 60% day1 65% day2 and 70% day3. I had 7/9 hatch. Too little humidity @ hatch can be a disaster IMO. If you have a few days between lockdowns I would up the humidity to at least 65% until finished 1st hatching then reduce to 40-45% until 2nd lockdown.

We lost one of the OEs that was under the Broody. It got broken. When she was off the eggs today I noticed the other two were covered in mud or poo or something. I made an executive decision and wiped eggs as best I could with a warm wash cloth, added more straw and am hoping for the best.

My son says they're candling the eggs at his school already, but not seeing anything as they are using a 'light bulb from a lamp in a well lit room'. He's asked to.bring the good flashlight into school tomorrow, I told him to steer away from the Marans eggs. ;)

I bet that's working out really well for them

Sorry about your lost OE. :(

I candled today; I think we're around 10 days in. 3 of my sussex eggs were duds. Two were clear and one had a bacterial ring, so I tossed them. My olive egg is way too dark to see into, but the other three were all wiggling around.

day 9 we candled and tosses 3 eggs. one was a day 2 quitter the other 2 didn't even start. opened a little room in the bator and re organized themometer and water to get in the 9 day eggs from the staggered hatch in it. now 3 to 5 day estamated eggs are in the other bator. should be day 12 to 14 now. upping the humidity wednesday in it and hoping for the best.
