Can I join in?? I set 36 eggs 8 days ago. I candled last night and I have several clears. I won't take them out yet... Don't quite trust myself until day 10 or 14...

Welcome to the thread! I usually hold onto my questionable eggs too. I have one that looks like its quit on me, but I'm gonna let it go a little while longer. It doesn't have a blood ring, but I can't see any veining or the little wiggling black spot like I can in the rest. I'm hoping it was just shy when I candled :/

Hello, you guys seem like the peeps to ask...
I will be attempting my first hatch using a still air incubator. EE pullet eggs.
Wanted to set today but can't find a hygrometer(humidity gauge) to put in. So I'm going crazy calling all over the place for one!
I shouldn't get my hopes up because so many things can go wrong and as much as I've read up, I don't feel confident that I know what I'm doing.
My questions may sound stupid but as I said I'm a newby.
First I have my eggs stored small end down in carton- do I need to turn them while storing, before placing in bator?
also
I don't have an egg turner or holding cups in bator so do I just lay them on the side and roll over when time to turn(3x a day)?

I'm using a homemade still air bator aswell and I got my hygrometer/thermometer combo fro walmart! And while you store your eggs in the carton place a thick book under one side if the carton and rotate 3x's a day like you would while turning and I don't have a turner neither so I just lay them on there sides and roll them a little 3x's or more a day. And mine are doing good besides taking their sweet time to hatch, I'm on day 22 and nothing lol!!

I am by no means an expert, but I'll try to help When I got my bator (a still air LG), I was in the same boat as you. I had a REALLY hard time finding a hygrometer. So, I didn't use one, and honestly, I still don't use one. I measure the progress of the eggs by the air cells. I just keep the wells filled in the bottom and up the humidity at lockdiwn. I've had great hatches!
I don't have a fancy egg turned either, so I would just lay them on their sides and turn them 3x's a day. This time, I'm using a paper egg carton to hold my eggs. I cut a hole in the bottom of each cup to allow for air flow. It sure has made turning much easier, without fear of dropping them (I always seem to drop at least one each time, not this time though!).
Yes, you should be turning your eggs at least 3x's a day while storing them so the chicks don't stick to the shell. You can do it by hand, or place them in a carton and put a thick book under one end. Simply move the book from one end to the other to tilt the eggs in opposite directions each time. Storing them small end down is correct, so you're doing good there. Make sure you store them in a cool (about 50-60°), humid (think basement) place.
One little bit of advice though, since you said you're hatching pullet eggs. Don't be too surprised if you don't get great hatch rates. I'm incubating pullet eggs this time as well, and when I candled I found that quite a few of them weren't even fertile.

I candled my 14 eggs last night, and I didn't see much of anything. They are on day 5 now. I usually see veins, and a red spot, but I only see tiny red lines coming from the air sack.

I also have 1 clear egg, but that one was refrigerated, and I wanted to see if it would hatch because it was a green egg. XD
I candled my egg that is due on Sunday, and it is 'swimmin around inside! This one is also going to be a mutt, but this one may, be fathered by my old silkie mix rooster. I hope so.

This is my old rooster, when he was young.

And this is the last combination I got, from hatching eggs bred by him.

Yes I did know the pullet eggs have less chance than my others but I figured its my test/practice hatch. Better to make mistakes now than with pure's or expensive eggs. Again thank you guys!

Another question-or two. I read that when I turn eggs in bator I open it (at least 3x day)& spray eggs with water mist, correct?
Also artical said when opening do not tip lid.
What does that mean? Hold it level ?(to keep some of the heat under the lid I'm guessing)
I think I'll try one more place to find hygrometer but feel like todays the day to place the eggs in the incubator. I know I could wait until friday but am so excited to start!
